INTRODUCTION
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police is the Canadian
national police service and an agency of the Ministry
of Public Safety Canada.
The RCMP's mandate: Section 18 of the Royal
Canadian Mounted Police Act. It includes preventing
and investigating crime; maintaining peace and order;
enforcing laws; contributing to national security;
ensuring the safety of state officials, visiting
dignitaries and foreign missions; and providing vital
operational support services to other police and law
enforcement agencies within Canada and abroad.
The RCMP is unique in the world since it is a national,
federal, provincial and municipal policing body. They
provide a total federal policing service to all
Canadians and policing services under contract to the
three territories, eight provinces (except Ontario and

In May 1873, the Parliament of Canada established a central
police force. One hundred and fifty recruits were sent west
to Manitoba. The new police force gradually acquired the
name North-West Mounted Police (NWMP).
In July 1874, the 275 mounted police officers marched west,
headed for southern Alberta, where American whisky
traders were operating among the Aboriginal people.
A permanent post was established at Fort Macleod, Alberta.
Part of the remaining half of the Force was sent to Fort
Edmonton and the rest returned east to Fort Pelly,
Saskatchewan, which had been designated as
headquarters.
The following summer, Fort Calgary, on the Bow River in
Alberta, and Fort Walsh, in Saskatchewan's Cypress Hills,
were established.

By 1885, the Force had grown to 1,000 men, but in 1896 its
future was threatened by the newly elected Prime Minister, Sir
Wilfrid Laurier, who decided to reduce and eventually disband
the NWMP. Support for the Force in the west prevailed, and it
gained new prominence policing the Klondike Gold Rush.
From 1905-16, the Force was contracted to police the provinces
of Alberta and Saskatchewan. These contracts ended due to the
provinces' desire to create their own police forces.
In 1919, Parliament voted to merge the Force with the Dominion
Police, a federal police force with jurisdiction in eastern Canada.
When the legislation took effect on February 1, 1920, the name
became the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and headquarters
was moved to Ottawa from Regina.
The RCMP returned to provincial policing with a new contract
with Saskatchewan in 1928.

From 1932-38, the size of the RCMP nearly
doubled, to 2,350, as it took over provincial
policing in Alberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick,
Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
The years following World War II saw a continued
expansion of the RCMP's role as a provincial
force. In 1950, it assumed responsibility for
provincial
policing
in
Newfoundland
and
absorbed the British Columbia provincial police.
Women were first accepted as uniformed
members in 1974. The seventies also brought an
expansion of responsibilities in areas such as
airport
policing,
VIP
security
and
drug
enforcement.

Badge

The RCMP regimental badge is the general symbol


used to identify the organization.
The principal elements on the early badges can still be
seen today; a buffalo or bison head facing front-wise,

Police Officer Careers


HOW TO APPLY?
Pre-application
Before applying to become a police officer of the RCMP, you
must:
Have a visual examination conducted by the Canadian
optometrist/ophthalmologist of your choice, including the
completion of theVision Examination of Applicant(RCMP 2180)
form.
Have your hearing assessed by the Canadian audiologist of your
choice, including the completion of theScreening Audiogram History
(RCMP 3184) form.

Please ensure that the forms are filled out accurately and
completely. You will be asked to submit them with your selection
package. Individuals who submit an application before obtaining
their vision and hearing exams will have their files closed and
will be unable to reapply for six (6) months.

RCMP Entrance Exam(RPAB) RCMP Police

Effective June 30, 2015, if you are successful
through the initial screening process, your education
information will be used to determine the next step of
your application.
If you possess a Bachelor's degree from a recognized
university, you will not be required to write the RCMP
Entrance Exam (RPAB). Applicants who are unable to
produce proof of education will have their files closed
and will be unable to reapply for six (6) months.
Applicants who are successful through the initial
screening process, but who do not possess a degree
from a recognized university, will be sent a registration
link for the Entrance Exam.
College diplomas, certificates, etc. are not considered
eligible for an exemption from the Entrance Exam.

Regular Member Selection Interview (RMSI)


A one on one interview is scheduled and conducted that will
help determine if you meet the organizational competencies
needed to become a police officer.
Suitability / Reliability Interview - Polygraph Examinatio
n

Should you be selected to continue in the process, you will be


instructed to attend an Interview and Examination designed to
help verify suitability and reliability.
Field Investigation and Security Clearance
A thorough investigation into your background is conducted to
help assess your character. If successful, a security clearance
will be issued.
Health Assessment
An assessment is completed by RCMP designated physicians
that includes a full medical and a psychological exam.
Enrollment
Once deemed suitable you are enrolled as a Cadet to start your
training atDepot, the RCMP Training Academy in Regina,
Saskatchewan. Here you will be assigned to a troop of 32
cadets, and begin the24-week Cadet Training Program.

Salary and Benefits


Cadet recruitment allowance
they will receive an allowance during the 24-week
training. The current Cadet recruitment allowance is
$500/week, to a maximum of $12,000 for the full 6
months. The RCMP also covers your room and board,
uniform, training courses, insurance and travel to and
from Depot.
If a Cadet resigns during training, or the two years
following training, the RCMP may require repayment of
any allowance received.
Salary
When you successfully complete the
Cadet Training Programand have been offered
employment, you will be hired as a Constable at an annual
salary of$50,674. Usually, within 36 months of service,
your annual salary will have increased incrementally
to$82,108.

Application requirements
To apply as a police officer of the RCMPyou must:

Be a Canadian citizen
Be 19 years of age at the time of engagement
Be proficient in English and/or French
Possess a valid, unrestricted driver's license
Possess a Canadian secondary school (high school) diploma or equivalent
Meet the health and psychological standards
Meet the vision standards
Meet the hearing standards
Meet the necessary level of physical abilities
Be prepared to carry a firearm and to use it or any other necessary
physical force
Be willing to spend six (6) months at the RCMP Academy (Depot) in
Regina, Saskatchewan
Be willing to relocate anywhere within Canada
Be willing to work shift work including weekends and holidays
Be free of any improper use of prescription or illegal drugs
Be aware of expectations with regards to tattoos and piercings
Lastly, police officers must be of good character.

To apply as a police officer,


youmust nothave:
Any matters pending or before a criminal court.
Been convicted of a criminal offence for which you
have not received a pardon/records suspension.
Participated whether you have been arrested and/or
charged or not in any serious criminal behaviour or
activity.
Participated in any criminal behaviour or activity
whether you have been arrested and/or charged or not
within at least one (1) year of the date of application.
Been dishonorably discharged or dismissed, including
released for misconduct, from another police, military,
or law enforcement organization.
Any pending and/or current personal bankruptcies or
consumer proposals.

Cadet Training

The training will be at Depot, the RCMP Training


Academy in Regina, Saskatchewan. Here you will be
assigned to a troop of 32 Cadets, and begin a 24-week
Cadet Training Program (CTP) that has a long and
proud history.
Cadet training is offered in both official languages,
English and French. A typical day lasts from 6 a.m.
until 4:30p.m., and there are also program-related
duties after hours.

CANADIAN POLICE
COLLEGE

The Canadian Police College (CPC) provides advanced and


specialized training and executive development to law enforcement
officers from all jurisdictions to help them combat crime and
increase Canadians safety since 1976.
Through its highly trained staff and subject-matter experts, the CPC
offers a suite of over 60 advanced and specialized courses and
workshops in investigative techniques, technological crime, forensic
identification, explosives disposal/investigations, police executive
development and professional development for Aboriginal policing.
Mandate
The mandate of the CPC is to develop police leadership and
management competencies, and provide advanced and specialized
training in law enforcement to the police community, particularly in
the areas of organized and multi-jurisdictional crime.
