Crash Course ON

Kumirmari
Kumirmari is the last habitable island of the
Indian Sundarbans, and unsurprisingly remote.
One of the worst hit hamlet during Aila cyclone.
Owing to these factors, most of the people live in
abject poverty.

With about 1000 people living there, the closest

resemblance to any health service they have is a tiny
primary health centre. Any proper treatment is, therefore,
a world of boat ride away.
Even if the river is kind and transport available, the
patient has to travel for about three hours to reach
the closest proper town with basic health amenities.
Hospital for them mean the government run ones in
Kolkata, where they need 6-7 hours to reach.

Any case of emergency the situation worsens, and even

when its not an emergency, crucial cases tend to worsen
in such long transits.

Rotaract Club Of HITK went to Sunderbans as

a part of phase I of Uncharted to install Solar
Lamps in August, 2015. It was only then we
identified this problem during our
conversations with the villagers.

These prevalent and recurrent problems led us to organize the first

Health Camp in Kumirmari.

HEALTH CAMP
14th & 15th of November, 2015

Health Camp intended to

introduce basic health profiling
and medicine distribution.

Organized by a team of 10
Rotaractors, accompanied by
two doctors from Kolkata: Dr
Biswarup Lahiri, Cardiologist
and Consultant Physician,
affiliated to CMRI, and Dr Arpita
Lahiri, Professor, Dept. of
Nephrology, IPGMER.

The health check-up

included measurement of
weight, blood pressure and
blood sugar.
About 156 villagers were
checked in these two days.

Outcome of the Health

Camp
The Camp
has helped the
inhabitants get
aware of their health
issues that arent
merely skin-deep,
and that arent
curable without
qualified medical
expertise.

Medicines
Were distributed.
Additionally, a few
necessary fast-aid
medicines were
stored, in case of
emergency.

While
some of them have
realised how their
health can get better
with a few lifestyle
changes, the others
have been cautioned
about how their
conditions can get
worse if prompt help
is not sought.

Health Camps can be arranged once every two/three months.

But, thats not a sustainable solution.

We can try organising health camps

Alternate solution
Establishing a virtual
healthcare centre, to
facilitate communication with
doctors and the patients.
Establish a facility of Water Ambulance (a
speed boat) which can transport patients
in need of serious medical attention to the
city in a short time.

Also, additionally our goal is to build volunteer pool of doctors and

medical students, house-staffs and interns, who would be able to visit the
island once in 2 months to conduct a health check up camp.
