Objectives
Assessed the impact of variable active
power injection (P), by solar PV
generation on voltage profile of a MV
distribution system.
Modelled solar radiation and load
demand based on solar geometry and
daily load pattern respectively.
Determined maximum allowable active
power injection by solar PV generation.
Proposed voltage sensitivity based
analytical method and tested on 33 bus
MV distribution system.

Simulation Results
Test Network-33 bus distribution system

Voltage sensitivity due to P injection can be

obtained from load flow Jacobian matrix:

Scenario 2 - Load Variability: Variable

P injection and variable load demand
Hourly voltage variations of each bus when PV (with P
injection) is integrated at bus 33

Voltage variation due to solar PV generation

can be estimated as:

The steady state voltage variation at bus m

due to impact of PV on bus k can be
expressed by:

Load demand and generation profile

Hourly voltage variations of each bus when PV

(with P injection) is integrated at bus 5

Solar PV Generation

Solar radiation is a key factor in determining

Solar PV generation. Under clear sky
condition, it is calculated using solar
geometry. Solar radiation varies due to the
effects of day cycle.
Solar power generated by a PV array is
computed by using standard solar model.

where,
Solar power generated by the PV array.
Solar radiation incident on the PV array.
Rated solar radiation of the PV array at
standard test condition [1000 w/m2].
Rated power output of the PV array.
Variation of solar radiation for Sydney location
for different day was calculated and is given
in the figure:
Variation due to day cycle

P output of a solar PV system.
= Reduced Jacobian matrix for
determining voltage sensitivity due to P
injection.
Maximum P injection at bus k is determined
based on maximum voltage variation at bus
m:

where,
Maximum allowable voltage limit [1.05
p.u].
Base case voltage of the distribution
system.
Maximum capacity is the minimum amount
of P necessary to violate the bus voltage.

Scenario 1- Generation Variability:

Maximum allowable P injection at each bus

Variable P injection and constant load

demand
Voltage variation of P injection at each bus

Conclusion

Maximum allowable P injection by solar PV

generation

Examined voltage variation in sample MV

distribution system for two case studies:
with and without considering load
variability and variable solar PV
generation.
Determined maximum allowable
penetration limit (P injection) for variable
solar PV generation using voltage
sensitivity based analytical technique.
Voltage sensitivity based methods are
more efficient than the repetitive power
flow techniques.
