What is a Robot?
The

word robot is a corruption of a

Czech word meaning slave or
manual laborer
The Robotics Institute of America
(RIA) defines a robot as:
A re-programmable multi-functional

manipulator designed to move

materials, parts, tools, or specialized
devices through variable programmed
motions for the performance of a variety
of tasks

Robot Definition
A

robot does not necessarily take the

form of a human.
There is no requirement for a robot to be
a neat, self contained package.
Distilled

Version: A robot is a machine

that uses a power supply, actuators
(motors), sensory equipment, and
electronic logic to perform varied tasks in
a guided, intelligent, and flexible manner.

The Use of Robots

In

modern society,
robots are used for
varying purposes
Industrial/Agricultural
Medical
Exploration
Domestic
Military
Human Augmentation
Entertainment
Research/Education

Industrial Robots
Weve

seen these on our

tours, both at Celestial
Seasonings and SparkFun.

Robots

are ideal in industrial

applications
Capable of rapid, repetitive tasks.
Do not get tired.
Do not get injured easier to fix

a robot than a human.

Capable of a high degree of
precision

Agriculture
Automation

of combine-harvesters
using GPS technology is in a late
stage of development and holds
great promise for reducing the manhours of machine operation
necessary for harvest.

Medicine & Surgery

Robotics

are beginning to
play a role in the
maintenance of the human
body.
The DaVinci robot has
already improved surgical
technique in some areas.
Improves upon human

dexterity and increases the

number of surgical tools that
can be used simultaneously

Exploration
Robots

can be made to survive in

environments deadly or harmful to
humans
Space / Extraterrestrial planets
Radioactive areas
Deep ocean exploration

Modern

Mars rovers carry

automated, miniature laboratories
for soil analysis.

Household Robots
The

Roomba is the poster child of domestic

robots.

Other

household robots are capable of

sweeping, mopping, and cleaning gutters.
Increase public awareness of emerging
technology

Military/Defense Robots
The

military has a keen interest in

robots, as a means to reduce
casualties during armed conflict.
Bomb-Squad robots
Landminer robots
Un-manned Ariel Vehicles
Predator & Global Hawk
Missile Defense

Human Augmentation
Increase

the carrying
capabilities of humans
to lift and carry
objects, or perform
certain tasks.
Restore mobility to
paralyzed or otherwise
disabled persons
The

HAL exo-skeleton
has moved out of the
lab and is available for
rental.

Entertainment
Animatronics

Disney developments
between the 1950s and today.
Asimo
Aibo robotic dog
Lego Mindstorms, RCX, and NXT.
Follow

lines that are not strictly

utilitarian, and provide easier
interaction with humans.

Robots and Education

The

fundamentals of building and

programming a robot are common
among most engineering
professions.

Robots

used in education teach

critical thinking skills, provide an
introduction to computer science,
and introduce the formal concepts of
logic.

Robotic Research I
Human Care and Mobility
One

of the primary
motivations behind
Japans
development of
advanced robotics
is senior care.

Robots

could
potentially assume
many roles in
assisting disabled
or elderly persons.

Robot Research II
Robot Cooperation/Coordination
The

development of robots that can

communicate with each other to
execute tasks could potentially
expand the scope of robot
applications

Robot Research III

Intelligent Robots
The

use of advanced sensor such as

video cameras allows robots to
acquire huge amounts of
information.
The use of sophisticated
programming to analyze these large
amounts of information could allow
robots to behave in a truly intelligent
manner.
More intelligent robots could perform
