Using Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor

Networks in a
Telemonitoring System for Healthcare

Existing Problem in Healthcare Systems

Excessive centralization of services
Classical functional architectures
A structure oriented to the system itself

Proposed Solution
Adopting modern functional architectures like SOA
(Services-Oriented Architecture)
Services are linked by means of standard communication
protocols
SOA model aims at:
interoperability
distribution of resources
lack of dependency of programming languages

Ambient Intelligence (AmI):

Tries to adapt the technology to the peoples
needs by proposing three basic concepts:
a) ubiquitous computing
b) ubiquitous communication
c) intelligent user interfaces.

Services laYers over Light PHysical

devices (SYLPH)
SYLPH platform is a distributed architecture
Asynchronous and nondependent on context
Devices working on them do not take continuously
processing time and are free to do other tasks, or consume
less energy.

SYLPH Architecture Layers

Fig. 1. SYLPH architecture layers

SSDS-SYLPH Services Directory Sub layer

SML-SYLPH Message Layer
WSN-Wireless Sensor Network

Functionalities
SYLPH implements an organization based on a stack
of layers
SSP is the internetworking protocol
SSDL describes the service, parameters
Applications can directly communicate between
devices

SYLPH basic operation

Fig. 2. SYLPH basic operation

The major steps involved in SYLPH basic operation:

Service registers itself on the SDN
Registered services can be invoked by any application
by means of SYLPH
They are stored in any node of the WSN

SYLPH Directory Nodes

Fig. 3. SYLPH Directory Nodes.

Steps for a node to discover services in a network:

Node 1 registers itself in the WSN
Sends a broadcast message (to node 0,as it is the only
active node)
Node 0 sends a message back to node 1
Node 3 registers itself on WSN
Node 1 stores this information and informs node 3
about its role as SDN

Telemonitoring
System

infrastructure
schema of the telemonitoring system

The Telemonitoring System

Several functionalities are directly embedded on the
WSN nodes
SYLPH gateways are used in order to interconnect
different heterogeneous WSNs
A network of ZigBee devices has been designed
Alerts can be forwarded from the patients homes to the
caregivers

Results
Improves security at
home to dependents
Automatically react to
emergency situations
Minimize error rates
Improve efficiency
Reduce costs

Fig. 5. False positives occurred during

the test period of the alert subsystem

Further it can be improved

by including a reasoning
mechanism to facilitate
decision making for diagnosis

Conclusion
SYLPH allows wireless sensor devices to work together
in a distributed way
SYLPH model allows the possibility of adding or
removing components at execution time
The telemonitoring systems architecture goes a step
ahead in designing systems for home care by offering
features that make it easily adaptable to any pervasive
environment
