Property Population
What is it?
Mechanisms used to distribute petrophysical

properties in a corner point grid

Why do we need to do it?
Spacial distribution & Heterogeneity
Determine uncertainty of model
Integrate different data sources
Why so many different methods and algorithms?
Answer dependent
Data dependent
FloGrid User Course

Volumetrics/Si

Typical Requirements
Corner Point Grid
Lithotype data
Examples: Lithology log, VCLAY log, Porosity log with

cutoffs to define reservoir/non reservoir

Petrophysical data
Porosity, critical water saturation, intrinsic permeability
(derived log), etc

Property Population Workflows

Workflow to populate entire grid:
Populate on a Unit per Unit basis
In each unit, first distribute lithotypes

FluvialObject Simulation, Sequential Indicator Simulation

Next, focus on the distribution of petrophysical data on a

lithotype per lithotype basis

Many stochastic & deterministic algorithms available

Volumetrics/Si

Property Population Workflows

Workflow for partial population of properties:
Modify existing properties with new information
Use a different algorithm
Copy the property grid you wish to modify
Identify the area you wish to populate in (examples: particular
fault block, k layer, boundary & VOI in the 3D viewer)
Populate petrophysical data in the desired area
Set output mask to indicate the area investigated above

Property Population Steps

Define data
to be used

Lump data

Define
algorithm to
be used

Modify
search
range (if
necessary)

Define if
output is to
be partial
population

Define
name &
property to
be gridded

Set-up Property Population Run

Population Parameter Set allows for batch processing
Define each population process, run in batch
Can populate in more than 1 Unit at a time
Property Grids automatically inherit characteristics of the
property type they are set as, ie Lithotype will be an integer

FloGrid User Course

Volumetrics/Si

Input Data
Primary Input is the data populated
Secondary data is used to guide the population
Depends upon algorithm chosen
Data sources:
Logs, 3D Property Grids, Maps, Scatter Set, Seismic Cube

Borehole Intersections
Since cell corner points do

not fall on the well location,

well logs may need to be
shifted to match the grid
Steep slopes & large
cells will cause large
shifts
Both top & bottom
surface intersections
may need shifts of
different amounts
Can be viewed & compared
to original log with the Well
Correlation Canvas

Cell Corner Points

Volumetrics/Si

Lumping
Input data can have many values per grid cell
Lumping prepares the input data for population by

averaging to one value per grid cell

Lumped logs can be viewed in the Well Correlation Canvas

FloGrid User Course

Volumetrics/Si

Deterministic Algorithms
Deterministic: cell values are calculated using a function
Distance to Nearest Neighbor, Constant Assignment,

Nearest Neighbor, Inverse Distance

Ordinary Kriging, Simple Kriging, Kriging with a Trend,
Kriging with Secondary Drift, Collocated Cokrigging

FloGrid User Course

Volumetrics/Si

Stochastic Algorithms
Stochastic: cell values are calculated using a function,
however, once calculated, a cell value may be considered
hard data thus have an effect on the values obtained in
nearby cells. The order that cells are solved is random.
Sequential Gaussian Simulation, Sequential Gaussian
Cosimulation
Sequential Indicator Simulation, Truncated Gaussian
Simulation, Fluvial Object Simulation

Variogram Tool
A variogram is a

representation of the
predictability of the
input parameter in XY &
Z
Derive an experimental
variogram directly from
input data
Save a variogram and
reuse it

FloGrid User Course

Volumetrics/Si

Search Range
The search range is algorithm & variogram dependent
FloGrid automatically sets the range
User can modify if necessary

Partial Population Set-up

Output Mask guides which cells information is populate into
Current or Template Property Grid
K-Layers, Surfaces, Displayed cells
Combinations of the above
Can Automatically Overwrite:
Nulls, Range, Classes, Exclude Range & Classes
