INTRODUCTION
DIGITAL STORAGE OSCILLOSCOPE.

The

modern tool of choice, digital storage oscilloscopes, or simply known as DSOs,

were developed to remedy the negative aspects of analog oscilloscopes.

Basic Principal
This

type of oscilloscope digitizes input signals through an analog-to-digital converter.

Its

attenuator scales the waveform while its vertical amplifier offers additional scaling
whenever the waveform passes through the analog-to-digital converter (ADC).

The

ADC digitizes and samples the incoming signal, and stores the data in the
memory. The time-base adjusts the oscilloscopes time display while the trigger
searches for trigger events.

Before

finally displaying the signal on the oscilloscope, the microprocessor system

performs additional postprocessing specified by the user.

This

data set is processed and then, transfer to the display that which is likely to be an LCD
flat panel instead of cathode ray tube.

Function or Application
The application of this oscilloscope including its own signal
analysis software that can extract ;
Many useful time-domain features (as example rise
time, pulse width, amplitude, frequency spectra)
2. Histograms and statistics
3. Persistence maps
4. A large number of parameters which are crucial to
engineers in various fields like telecommunications,
disk drive analysis and power electronics.

CONCLUSION
It has advantages over the analog oscilloscope which
are:
1. Brighter and bigger display with color to
distinguish multiple traces.
2. Equivalent time sampling and averaging across
consecutive samples or scans lead to higher
resolution down to V.
3. Peak detection.
4. Easy pan and zoom across multiple stored traces
allows beginners to work without a trigger.
5. Allows for automation.

However;
It has disadvantages which are;
1.
2.

A disadvantage of digital oscilloscopes is the limited refresh rate

of the screen.
Additionally, it is sometimes difficult to spot "glitches" or other
rare phenomena on the black-and-white screens of standard
digital oscilloscopes.
But through latest nowadays technology, both of these
difficulties have been overcome by "digital phosphor
oscilloscopes", which store data at a very high refresh rate and
display it with variable intensity, to simulate the trace
persistence of a CRT oscilloscope. The drawback is just latest
technology has higher cost.
