The main purpose of the project is to increase the
efficiency and enhance performance of CI engine The air flow inside the engine is an important factor deciding the overall performance of the engine Hence the air swirl is increased in order to obtain the results. The project involves modification in inlet-manifold design to increase the air swirl and turbulence
Understanding the different powers of engine and
there relations with each other. Understanding the different efficiencies of the engines and necessity of their calculation. Recalling mentally activities of conducting trial. Tabulating necessary observations Comparing results.
Air fuel ratio
Compression ratio Brake thermal Eff Injection pressure Engine load and speed Thermal efficiency Effective pressure and torque Mechanical Eff Friction Power
Turbulence is random motion and swirl is orderly
movement of air Atomization is the breaking of fuel jet into fine spray under high pressure Turbulence ensures uniform fuel distribution and combustion Initial turbulence is created in piston heads with modification in manifold and piston shapes designs.
Swirl is obtained in the intake manifold by using
internal threads of constant pitch Intake manifold is also inclined to different positions.
At 45 degree
At 60 degree
At 90 degree

Measuring fuel consumption by using fuel gauge.
Measuring load on dynamometer Handling tachometer and measuring Speed Adjusting fuel supply to keep the engine speed constant Measuring room temp, exhaust gas temp, calorimeter water inlet&outlet temp, temp of exhaust gas leaving calorimeter etc. Measuring cooling water inlet and outlet temperature.
Uniform
combustion at all regions
Complete combustion of charge hence reduced harmful emissions Burn time is reduced It is seen that the jet of air after leaving the intake port impinges onto the cylinder wall and diverts back causing the formation of small and large vertices within the cylinder
Indicated power: the power developed in the cylinder
Frictional power: power req. to overcome the friction between all sliding parts Mechanical efficiency: ratio of brake power to indicated power Brake thermal efficiency: ratio of brake power to heat supplied Indicated thermal efficiency: ratio of indicated power to heat supplied
In cylinder flow structure is greatly influenced
by intake manifold inclination It is found that at 60 degree intake manifold gives maximum brake thermal efficiency. This work improves both performance and fuel economy. By varying manifold inclination we get better performance than normal one.
