Synonyms
Synonyms are words that have essentially the
same meaning, and they provide some variety in
your word choices, helping the reader to stay
focused on the idea being discussed.
Example: Myths narrate sacred histories and
explain sacred origins. These traditional
narratives are, in short, a set of beliefs that are
a very real force in the lives of the people who
tell them.
Pronouns
This, that, these, those, he, she, it, they, and we are
useful pronouns for referring back to something
previously mentioned. Be sure, however, that what you
are referring to is clear.
Example: When scientific experiments do not work out
as expected, they are often considered failures until
some other scientist tries them again. Those that work
out better the second time around are the ones that
promise the most rewards.
Transitional Words
There are many words in English that cue our readers to
relationships between sentences, joining sentences
together. See the handout on Transitional Devices
(Connecting Words). There you'll find lists of words such
as however, therefore, in addition, also, but, moreover,
etc.
Parallelism
We use parallel structure when when we put
two or three words or phrases of the same
part of speech together in a series. This
allows writers to express several ideas in
one sentence and to express these ideas
clearly.
The use of conjunctions is important here.
Example:
1. When she raises her hands,
hands students
know they must be quite.
2. When she stands straight,
straight students
know they must be quiet.
When she raises her hands and stands
straight, students know they must be
quiet.
Exercises
1. I live in a flat with my family. We have two
bedrooms and a living room. We have a garden
and we have some flowers there. In weekdays I
arrive home at five o'clock and I have lunch.
Then I do my homework and go to bed. I had a
computer but now it doesn't work. I have a
brother and a sister and I think I am very lucky to
live with them. Sometimes our relatives visit us.
Our flat becomes very crowded sometimes but I
like it.
Thank you!
