This document discusses the characteristics of a strong thesis statement and how to construct a three-pronged thesis statement. It states that a strong thesis (1) makes a claim about the topic that can be supported with evidence, (2) indicates the scope and point of the discussion, (3) expresses one main idea to avoid confusing the reader, and (4) helps the writer keep their paper focused on a narrow topic. It then provides examples of how to write a three-pronged thesis statement for a literature analysis or science paper by including three main points and showing how the topic will be proven. Finally, it emphasizes the importance of using parallel structure in the three prongs so that each point is given equal importance.

Grammar Connection: A Note about Parallel Structure The
3 points in your thesis must be written in
parallel structure. Parallel structure means using the same pattern of words to show that two or more ideas have the same level of importance. This can happen at the word, phrase, or clause level. The usual way to join parallel structures is with the use of coordinating conjunctions such as and or or.
Examples: Parallel Words and Phrases With
Parallel: Mary likes hiking, swimming, and
bicycling.
With
the -ing form (gerund) of words:
infinitive phrases:
Parallel: Mary likes to hike, to swim, and to ride a
bicycle. OR Mary likes to hike, swim, and ride a bicycle.
Keep Your Sentence Structure
