Basics of Sound
The science of sound is associated with the motional
disturbances from equilibrium of elastic media
Acoustics may be divided into three branches:
Sound production
Sound transmission
Sound detection

Various Sound levels in day-to-day life

What is Noise?
Noise is defined as an undesired sound
A heterogeneous sound may be made up of
frequencies 100 to 10,000 Hertz

Prevention of Noise

SOME TYPICAL
APPLICATION OF
ACOUSTIC FABRICS

Sound control curtains

Sound control doors

Acoustic blanket enclosure

Acoustic barrier walls

Hometech-Carpets They are one of the major

home textiles. The positive effects of carpet on the
internal environment that were identified were:

Acoustic comfort

Thermal comfort and energy saving

Optical comfort (provided by selection of design

and colour)

Safety from fire

Air hygiene

According to Carpet and Rug Institute of America,

the main factors affecting sound absorption are as
follows:

Cut pile construction provides better

absorption than loop pile construction.

In cut pile constructions, pile height and

density increase absorption.

In loop pile constructions, pile height is more

important than pile density.

Acoustic performance is independent of the

pile fiber type.

Mobiltech
A typical automotive Carpet Structure includes the following:

Decorative top layer of fibre

Thermoplastic material

Acoustic & vibration damping layer

Matrix of Material in Automotive Textiles

Layer

Materials used

Top layer

Tufted BCF nylon or needle punched

Polyester or Polypropylene back, latex coated.

Thermoplasti
c layer

Polyethylene powder, meld able fibres, EVA

or a further thick layer of compounded SBR
latex.

Acoustic layer

Heavy layer of EPDM, shoddy fibre or PU

foam

Conclusion

Research and development work is being done

continuously in the Technical Textile area. Both basic
and application oriented research is conducted to find
new materials, to improve the properties of the existing
materials and products and to find new application areas
for technical textiles. High tech research is continuously
done at various levels of technical textiles polymers,
fibers, yarns, manufacturing methods finishing and
coating. Applied research had been proved very
valuable to solve major industrial problems.
Acoustic textiles are generally recognized to be one
of the most important and promising areas for the future
of the textiles industry. Advances in polymers, fibers,
yarns, manufacturing technology and fabric/web forming
technologies have spearheaded the development of
Acoustic textiles. A single problem with great importance
in field of Acoustics can be solved with new techniques
developed in field of textile, so there is a continuous
research in textile in order to be more beneficial to
human.
