Important Definitions

What is a Project?
A temporary endeavour undertaken to create a unique
product, service or result (PMI, 2008)
Complex, routine, one time effort limited by time, budget
resources ad performance specifications designed to
meet customer needs (Gray & Larson 2010, pp 3)

What is Project Management?


the means, techniques, and concepts used to run a
project and achieve its objectives (Meredith & Mantel,
2012, pp- 26)

Project management is not restricted to specialists.


Managing projects is often a vital part of everyones job

Important Definitions

Programme: A group of related projects managed in a


coordinated way to obtain benefits and control not
available from managing them individually. Programme
may include elements of related work outside the scope
of the discrete projects in a programme. (Gray & Larson,
2010, pp 17)

Portfolio: A collection of projects and programmes that


are grouped together for pursuing objectives focused on
some specific business strategy (Gray & Larson, 2010, pp
17)

Stakeholders: Individuals or groups with special interest


in project (Meredith & Mantel, 2013, pp 26)

Important Definitions

Project Lifecycle: A standard concept of a project


wherein it goes through start-up, building, maturing and
termination phase (Meredith & Mantel, 2013, pp 26)

Product Lifecycle: is the whole life of the product: from


its conception, creation and use till end. Project lifecycle
is subset of product lifecycle. (Gray & Larson, 2010, pp
17)

Important Definitions

Deliverables: Desired elements of value, outcomes or


results that must be delivered for a project to be
considered complete (Meredith & Mantel, 2013, pp 26)

Scope: Well defined set of desired end results- (Haves


and Have Nots)

Interdependancies: Relations between organisational


functions where one function or task is dependent on
another.

Classification of PM Processes

Product Oriented Processes: Processes used in


creating the product of the project. They are specific to
industries, technologies and application areas.

Project Management Processes: Knowledge, skills and


tools and techniques associated with good PM practices,
desired results or outputs from these processes and the
necessary data or other inputs for using these techniques
are collectively identified as project management
processes.
