The Human Breathing System

Breathe

in and out.
Notice your chest and belly moving and
feel the soft air passing from the nose.
Listen to the quiet sounds of breathing
in and out. Imagine the air moving from
the nose into the throat, through the air
tubes, and into the airsacs.

Parts of the Respiratory

System
The

parts of the respiratory

system that are in charge of
supplying oxygen are the nose,
nasal passageways, windpipe,
lungs, and diaphragm.

The Breathing Process

In

the nose and nasal passages, the

entering air is made warm, damp, and
clean of unknown particles
Next, the air moves down through the
trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, and
alveoli.
Trachea is the empty tube that serves
as passageway of air into the lungs.

Cont
Bronchi

are the two branching tubes

that connect the trachea to the lungs.
Bronchioles are the hairlike tubes that
connect to the alveoli
Alveoli are the airsacs that allow gas
exchange in the lungs.

1. What a Bunch Of Grapes!.

Respiration
The

process wherein the body takes in

oxygen and eliminates gaseous waste
products

Division:
1.

Upper Respiratory Tract

- nose
- nasal passages
- throat or pharynx
2. Respiratory airways
- voice box or larynx
- trachea
- bronchi
- bronchioles

3.

Lungs
- respiratory bronchioles
- alveolar sacs
- alveoli

3 Types of Respiration
CELLULAR

RESPIRATION
- is the biochemical oxidation of
glucose and consequent synthesis of
adenosine triphosphate (ATP)

INTERNAL RESPIRATION
there is an exchange of oxygen (O2)
and
carbon dioxide (CO2) between the internal
body fluid and individual cells.

EXTERNAL RESPIRATION
Involves

the exchange of O2 and CO2

between the environment and the
organism.

PATHWAY OF AIR INSIDE THE BODY

NOSE
- serves as the first organ in the respira
tory system where air passes through
- is divided into the right and left nasal
Passages by a cartilage called NASAL
SEPTUM which separates the nostrils
* CILIA- microscopic fingerlike
extensions
*MUCOUS MEMBRANE
1.

* COARSE HAIR
- help trap and prevent dirt and large
particles from entering further into the
respiratory tract.
>> it is in the nasal passages that air is
moistened and warmed.
2. PHARYNX
3. LARYNX or VOICE BOX
- contains the vocal chords, that vibrates
when air passes within the cords, creating
sounds

4. TRACHEA or WINDPIPE
- is a tube made up of cartilage which
carries air toward the lungs
- a hollow tube that serves as
passageway of air into the lungs
5. BRONCHI (pl.) BRONCHUS (sing.)
- also called bronchial tubes; two
branching tubes that connect the trachea
to the lungs

6. BRONCHIOLES
- microscopic tubes
- the finer subdivisions of the bronchi
- hairlike tubes that connect to the
alveoli
7. ALVEOLI or AIR SACS ( alveolus)
- the sites of gas exchange
>> Each lung has about 300 million
alveoli.
