What does best practice mean?

A best practice is an industry-wide agreement that
standardizes the most efficient and effective way to
accomplish a desired outcome.
A best practice generally consists of a technique,
method, or process.
The concept implies that if an organization follows best
practices, a delivered outcome with minimal problems or
complications will be ensured.
Best practices are often used for benchmarking and
represent an outcome of repeated and contextual user
actions.

Managing your Boss

Successfully managing your

boss will make your time at
work more pleasant and make it
easier to accomplish your goals.

Managing your boss

Don't be your own worst
enemy when it comes to
interactions with your boss.
Instead of blaming him for
your problems, learn his
style and adapt.
- Robert Hewes

Managing your boss

You can't change your boss's style, but you can
understand and adapt to it.
When you see your boss about to make a foolish
decision, suggest a better alternative. However, once
your boss has made that decision, stop second-guessing
and do your best to implement it regardless of whether
you agree.

Operate in a "no surprises" mode and get the right

information to your boss in a timely, effective manner.

When given an assignment, follow through fanatically.

Take your job seriously. It is appreciated when its
obvious that truly care about what you do.

Managing your boss

Provide solutions not complaints. Dont bring up a
problem unless you have a solution in mind.
Face the facts and don't let your emotions get in the
way.
Look to the future and anticipate what may happen.
Once you have a sense of potential challenges, develop
a plan for what you're going to do about them. Play out
different scenarios and have an opinion about what will
happen and what your recommendation will be. Then,
communicate it.
Over-communicate. Give updates. Even if you think your
boss knows what's going on, update him with what
you're seeing.

Managing your boss

Accept the fact that your boss has been given the power to
direct your activities; even if you are much smarter than he is.
Don't expect perfection. Your boss is human.
Study your boss' management style and figure out what
makes him happy. Look for clues that tell you how she likes
work done or how she prefers to get information. If you're not
sure what your boss expects from you, in terms of results,
work habits, communication style, or anything else, then don't
try to guess - ask!
Try to make your boss look good.
Produce quality results, meet deadlines, stay within your
budget, respond to people quickly. Find problems that need
solving and address them. Contribute new ideas and
suggestions.

Managing your boss

Never, never, never complain to others about your
boss. Trumpeting your unhappiness about your boss far
and wide will only get you in trouble.
Give your boss a sincere compliment from time to
time. Managers hear lots of complaints, but few employees
ever bother to give their boss a kind word. However, paying
a sincere compliment is not the same as praise-singing or
flattering.

Dynamic Leadership
A person who merely administers the
status quo without changing it is not a
good leader. A leader should be
dynamic.
Leadership is inextricably linked to
change.

Dynamic University System

Universities are pluralistic institutions
with multiple, ambiguous and
conflicting goals.

Barriers to the adoption of best

practices
According to the American Productivity & Quality Center, the
three main barriers to adoption of a best practice are:

a lack of knowledge about current best

practices,
a lack of motivation to make changes
involved in the adoption of the best
practices, and
a lack of knowledge and skills required to
adopt the best practices.
