Gender Inequality in

the United States

Marine Corps
By: Karla Zelaya

History of
The United States
the Corps
USMC
Marine
began
on November 10,
1775 with the
founding of
Continental Marines.
The Marines 1st land
battle on foreign soil
was in Libya, where
600 Marines stormed
the city of Derna to
rescue a crew from
pirates.

Members of society
perceive the USMC

Many Marines have retired

because they learned that
being part of structured
society was not for them.

Some perceptions of issues

that Marines have noticed or
experience is unfairness and
job satisfaction may vary
depending, race, ethnicity,
and gender.

There has been conflicts

where women are not being
treated equally and are not
given the opportunity to take
a higher position.

Many Marines say that they

are like a family that will be
there for you no matter
what, even when your
blood related family wont
be.

There are pros and cons

about the being a Marines
because they are required
to more things than any
other branch since they are
the first ones to be
deployed.

What has
changed
over time in
the USMC?

Opha May Johnson was the first

woman to enlist in the United
States Marine Corps in 1918.

This was one of the most

significant changes that the
USMC has done.

Another change would be how

the recruitments are treated
during boot camps. Drill
Instructors are not allowed to
hit the recruits anymore..

Has it caused various

institution to change?
Yes, there has been many various institution that

caused to change because there are many people

who do not support the military and are part of a
different institution such as schools.
Even in the past, the United States Marine Corps

has changed many industries. For example, in

WWII the shortage of men forced many women to
work in men labor jobs, which had a long term
effect by kicking off the women civil rights and
creating more gender diversity in work places.

Feature that have not

changed

Some features and

traditions that have not
changed are uniforms,
parade formations, the
rank system,
celebrations such as
banquets.

The physical training

has not changed even
though some people
say that it can be to
tough for women.
However, the marines
continue to make it
equal for both genders.

How would you improve it?

There are many things that I

would like to change in the United
States Marine Corps and the
military in general because there
are unjust actions such as gender
and equality.

For instance, providing more

opportunities for women to
receive and take part of higher
roles.

In addition, there are unfairness

with the promise of having
benefits such as the GI bill. Some
do not receive the full amount of
money they were promised to pay
for their education

Major participants and

their roles and status

Major participants and

their roles and status

Most of the participants who join the military or the United

States Marine Corps are young adults.

Young adults join the United States Marine Corp because they
are influenced that they will receive a lot of benefits and that
it would be a better route than attending college.

Most of the participants join the military because they think

that the military will pay for education and work at the same
time.

In the graph before this slide shows that 15,545 of 21,822

marine participants are white male.

In addition the graph shows how there are more white male
marines in higher ranks than any other race or gender.

Does your institution work

better for some members?

The United States Marine

Corps benefits those who
are in power because they
are the ones who have the
ability to make a demand.

I can say that if also

benefits the people of the
United States to certain
extent because the military/
Marines are the one who
protect and fight for the
people.

Functionalist
In the United States Marine Corps the

functionalism perspective are the war and

terrorism because it is an important function. It
increases social solidarity as a society unites to
defeat a perceived enemy.

Conflict Theory
The conflict theory in the United States Marine

Corps that the thing that comes out of this

institution is war. However, this institution cost a
lot of money. Even people who do not support this
system are required to fund the military.
