Introduction
Sociology is considered a very popular and fast growing
science came into existence (only after 1839 AD) is vast and
broad discipline. It can be divided into various sub-divisions
on the basis of its contents. Sociology of health and medicine
deals with organization's role, relationships, norms, values and
beliefs of medical practice as a form of human behavior. Here,
the social processes that occur in a medical setting are studied.
Thus, sociology of health and medicine is research and
analysis of medical environment from a sociological
perspective (Sigdel, 2012).

Relation of Sociology of Health and Medicine

With other Branches of Sociology
Sociology of Health and Medicine has flourished since the
early 1950s, and for a number of year's has been the largest
sub-group within the British Sociological Association. There
are strong interrelation among the specialism of sociology of
health and medicine and the broader branches of sociology.
Empirical and theoretical work in sociology of health has
influenced broader sociological debates, and theoretical work
from elsewhere in sociology is readily applied to the field of
sociology of health and medicine (BSA, 2014).

Sociology of Gender and Sociology of Health and

Medicine
Research by feminist sociologists has redefined the
agenda within the sociology of health and
medicine. The study of gender roles and
relationships is now embedded within the sociology
of health, producing path breaking research in
diverse areas, such as reproductive health, womens
unpaid health and caring work, and the historical
development of medical knowledge and the
professions
(BSA,
2014).

Sociology of Ageing and Sociology of

Health
and
Medicine
It is ironic that a small amount of research
by medical sociologists is devoted to older
people despite the high proportion of health
resources spent on people above retirement
age. What research there is tends to focus
on sick older people who are already
within the health care system. There is very
little research on the majority of older
people, who have good health and no
functional impairment.

For example, medical sociologists have learnt a great deal over

the last two decades about lay ideas of health and about illness
behavior, but these studies have all excluded those over the age of
65, as if their illness behavior and ideas about health are
uninteresting and unimportant (Beata, 2015).

Social Anthropology and Sociology of Health and

Medicine
Social anthropology studies the relationship between
human evolution and disease in the past, the
biological and cultural determinants of disease, health
and health care, the basis and effectiveness of
traditional health care systems and suggests ways to
integrate modern medicine into traditional societies
(BSA, 2014).

Psychology and Sociology of Health and Medicine

It is believed that sociology of health and medicine and
psychology are closely related as there is no meaning of
sociology of health and medicine without psychology.
Sociology of health and medicine and psychology has to
depend on sociology to understand human nature and behavior
in proper way. Psychology provides the real fact regarding the
matter of social structure, culture and social organizations to
which an individual belong to develop the personality. In this
sense sociology of health and medicine is concerned with the
social aspects of health and illness, social function of health
institutions and organizations, the relationship of health care
delivery to other social systems and social behavior of health
personnel and consumers of health care (Rogers & Pilgrim,
2010).

Conclusion
In conclusion it should be stated that the sociology of gender,
sociology of aging, social anthropology, psychology and
sociology of health and medicine are interrelated like a coin.
All of them are the science of society and one is not possible
without other one.
