Art of Weaving

Visayas and Mindanao

Before we start the tour on the different art of weaving of


Visayas and Mindanao, lets identify first the common
material being used by the natives of Visayas and
Mindanao in weaving..

Visayas was the first region to come in contact with the


Western Civilization.
As early as Pre-Hispanic times, Visayans were already
embraced art as they were called Pintados by the
Spaniards.

Visayan Weaving

In
Iloilo,
weaving
patadyong is an important
industry.
Patadyong is a wraparound piece of cloth
worn by women.

Iloilo Weaving

Bugasong Patadyong
is a tube cotton fabric
of plaid design where
Antiqueos
is
renowned.
Pia Cloth is also
known in the province.

Antique Weaving

Valencia, Negros Oriental is


known for their sinamay
weaving.
Sinamay is of less fine
tissue,
but
almost
transparent and far more
durable than the fabrics
made from pineapple fibers.

Samar is known
for their colorful
and
beautiful
hand-woven banig
made from tikog
Waray term for
pandan leaves.
Waray weavers are
locally known as
paraglara.

Inaul
is
a
traditionally
woven piece of
cloth
by
Maguindanaos.

Tausug tribe of
Sulu is known for
their
Laminosa
mats
Laminosa
mats
are
made
of
romblon leaves or
pandan
leaves
which are dyed in
different colors

In Mandaya, Davao,
women were taught
how to waeve abaca
fibers known as
dagmay.
In dying their woven
fabrics, Mandaya used
mud, root and other
organic material.

Scissors/cutter

What to do:
Create a 1-inch strip
Do the under-over pattern
The more original your design the more interesting and
creative they will be!
