Challenges: Proficiency and College &

Career Readiness
Progress is not success.
Schools are far below the audacious 90% goals
established at launch; gains have generally been
incremental over time.
Despite intense focus, reading outcomes did not yield
significant improvement in Year 4 as desired.
Schools that demonstrated sizable gains in student
achievement in previous years have not been able to
sustain improvement year over year (exception
Statesville Road Elementary).

Measuring Success
There are many ways to measure success.
Student achievement data is an important
component in measuring success.
Data never lies, but it does not tell the whole truth
either
End-of-Year Test data represents how students
perform on a high stakes tests on a single day in a
school year.
We value multiple factors in considering the L.I.F.T.
Schools improvement trajectory.

Year 4 Report from Research for

Action
Deeper analysis of student outcome data
Continuous Learning Calendar Schools impact
Review of leading indicator data (attendance, culture,
suspensions)
Qualitative assessment based on focus group feedback
from parents and interviews with other key
shareholders.
Expect report in late fall/early winter.

Year 5: Moving Ahead

No major programmatic
changes in teaching and
learning.
o There are no miracles.
o Focus on an accumulation of
small successes over time.
Build Up
o Focus on build up for sustainable
and significant results.
Year 5 Focus: Building parent
and community engagement to
enhance student achievement
efforts.
