PRINCIPLE
A coupling is defined as mechanical
device that permanently joins two
rotating shafts to each others. The
shafts that are connected by the
coupling can be disengaged only after
dismantling the coupling

. There are two main applications of the coupling.

The most common application is joining of shafts of two
separately built or purchased units so that a new machine can
be formed. For example, a coupling is used to join the shaft of
an electric motor to the input shaft of a hydraulic pump. The
maximum feasible length of one-piece shaft depends upon the
handling facilities, presses and machine tools. Couplings are
used to make long line shaft by joining individual shafts. Besides
this the couplings are used to join shafts at angles, to
compensate for misalignment between the shafts, to prevent
the transmission of overload torque and to alter vibration
characteristics of the drive, in some cases. Two shafts connected
by the coupling may have collinear axes, intersecting axes or
axes that are parallel at a small distance apart.
Couplings are mainly classified into two categories: 1.Rigid,
2.Flexible

RIGID FLANGE COUPLING CLASSIFICATION:

1.Protected type
2.Unprotected type

In this case protecting circumferential rims cover bolt head and nuts.
In case of failure of nuts and bolts while machine
is being rubbed, broken pieces will dash against this rim and finally
fall down. This protects the operator against accident.

The resolving bolts and nuts are unsafe to operator and may lead to accident.

WORKING AND
CONSTRUCTION
A

flange coupling consist of two flanges, one

keyed to driving shaft other to drive shaft. The
two flanges are connected together by means
of 4 or 6 bolts on circle concentric with axis of
shaft. So, Power is transmitted driving shaft to
left side flange through key. It is then
transmitted to right side flange through bolts.
Finally power is transmitted from right side
flange through key to drive shaft. Since flange
coupling is rigid type of coupling.

Two mating flanges have spigot and recess for precise

location. The left side has cylindrical projection called
spigot, while the right side flange has corresponding
recess. The diameter of spigot and recess are machined
with more accuracy. During the assembly spigot fixes
into the recess and the two flanges are located
precisely w.r.t. each other. This ensures alignment of
axis of two shafts

SELECTION OF MATERIAL

Rigid

flange is usually manufactured by casting as it

consists of projection and recess. The commonly used
material for flange coupling is grey cast iron which is
characterized by graphitic microstructure causing
fracture of the material to have a grey appearance. It is
one of the most commonly used form of cast iron and the
widely used cast material based on casting properties.
Most alloys of Ironcontain2.5-4% carbon, 1-3% silicon and
the rest is iron by weight proportion. It has less tensile
strength and shock resistance as compared to its
compressive strength.

Its mechanical properties are controlled by the size and

morphology of the graphite flakes which deflect a
passing crack and initiate counter less new cracks as the
material breaks due to which it has good wear resistance
and damping capacity. It also experiences less
solidification shrinkage than other cast iron that does not
form a graphitic microstructure during casting process.
The silicon promotes good corrosion resistance and
increase fluidity while casting. It also offers good
weldability.

MANUFACTURING METHODS

Rigid

Coupling: The components present are as follows:

1. Flange .
2.Shafts.
3. Nuts and Bolts.
4. Keys.
Cutting, hitting, rolling and forging are the mfg. processes
for the above mentioned parts. Drilling, surface finishing
and anti rust coating are also the processes.
Flanges can be made by casting processes. Material used
is Mild Steel.
Cutting: For this we use cutting machine or water jet
cutter.

Heating: This is the 2nd process done on cutting part. The part
is heated at high temperature but below recrystallization
temperature.
Forging & Rolling: In this process the shape is given to material
and forged into desired shape by using closed dye.
Drilling: The part is drilled at PCD where the bolt is fitted.
According to no. of application of bolts, drilling is done.
Surface Polishing: It is done by using emery paper or polishing
machine.
Anti Rust Coating: This is done to protect flange from rust.
Flanges have complex shapes and easiest method to make the flange is
casting.
flanges are usually made of grey cast iron of grade FG200,
the bolt key and shaft are made of plain carbon steel.

ADVANTAGE AND DISADVANTAGES :

ADVANTAGES-

1. Rigid coupling has high torque transmitting capacity.

2. Rigid coupling is easy to assemble and dismantle.

3.Rigid coupling has simple construction ,it is easy to design and

manufacture.

DISADVANTAGE-

1.It is a rigid type of coupling. It cannot tolerate misalignment between

axis of two shaft.

2. It can be used only where the motion is free from shocks and vibration.

3.Require more radial space.

APPLICATION:

1. Connect driving and driven part.

2. To transfer power

(Ex. Motor transfer power to pump through coupling.)

3. To introduce protection against overloads.
