Cardiac Healthcare using Android

Referenced Monitoring (CHARM)

-Provision of inexpensive, effective mobile Health security solutions.

Statistics about Cardiac diseases:

Leading cause of death worldwide. Claims more lives annually than all forms
of cancer combined.

17.3 million deaths recorded worldwide every year.

Heart attack risks are augmented by

-Smoking
-Obesity/Fast food lifestyle
-Physical Inactivity
-Diabetes

On the bright side

Treatment administered to Heart attack victims has a fairly high success rate.

On an average, 95.5% lives are saved through Angioplasty, etc.

The success rate can be further improved if the door-toballoon time can be reduced.
For this, an effective method of heart arrhythmia detection
and data transmission is necessary.

SCHEMATIC BLOCK DIAGRAM OF THE TRANSMITTER PART

A photoplethysmogram (PPG) sensor is used to detect the bio

signal from the peripheral body parts.
The continuous analog output from the sensor is fed to a
microcontroller (ARDUINO) for signal conditioning and analog to
digital conversion.
The conditioned signal from the Arduino is sent via Bluetooth
to the patients mobile phone.
An android app on the phone is used to analyze the data for
abnormality in pulse.

RECEIVER PART

The doctor will receive the abnormal pulse in the form of a

message on his phone along with the patients location.

The sample data will also be sent to cloud for real time
monitoring.

PHOTOPLETHYSMOGRAPHY
(PPG)
Plethysmography is a technique of measuring
the volume changes in peripheral parts of the
body, like fingers,forehead,etc.

USES:
Monitoring heart rate and cardiac cycle
Monitoring hypo and hypervolemia
Monitoring respiration
Monitoring blood pressure

Arduino
Why Arduino?
Inexpensive - Arduino boards are relatively
inexpensive compared to other microcontroller.
Cross-platform - The Arduino IDE runs on Windows,
Macintosh OSX, and Linux.
Simple programming environment - The Arduino
Software (IDE) is easy-to-use and flexible.
Open source and extensible software - The
Arduino software is published as open source tools.
Open source and extensible hardware - The plans
of the Arduino boards are published under a
Creative Commons license, so experienced circuit
designers can make their own version of the
module.

What is Arduino?

Arduino is an open-source prototyping

platform based on easy-to-use hardware and
software.

One can tell the board what to do by sending

a set of instructions to the microcontroller on
the board using the Arduino programming
language and the Arduino Software (IDE).

Arduino is easily connected to laptop/PC

Android Quick Facts

Most widely used smartphone OS

Powers 82% of the Indian smartphone market

Phones, tablets, Google TV and more

Current version is Android 6.0 (Marshmallow), but is only 0.88% of the market

Version 4.0.3-4.0.4 is 12.9% of the installed base

Versions 4.1.2-4.3 are 55.5% of the installed base

Versions 5.0-5.1 are 23.7% of the installed base

Software Requirements & Setup

Install Java SE 8

Ensure that your PATH and JAVA_HOME are configured properly

Probably want to remove the CLASSPATH if your system has one

Android Studio 1.3.1 to design the layout and do the programming.

An Android Smartphone to test the app.

Sending an SMS to doctor in

case of EMERGENCY

The heart rate (taken

as an average of 15
min) of the patient
Location of the
patient (through in
built GPS system of
the smart phone)

Sending real time data to

cloud

Real time data will be

sent
Graph will be
generated in cloud so
that doctor can access
it from anywhere in the
world and take proper
decision.
