The Birth of a Hero


Born June 19, 1861, in Calamba,
Laguna
June 22, 1861, he was baptized
Jose Rizal Mercado at Calamba
Catholic Church by Fr. Rufino
Collantes. His godfather was Fr.
Pedro Casaas. But his full name
is Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado y
Alonso Realonda.
He came from a typical middle
class (principalia) family who
owns an agricultural business of
rice and sugar.
His father was Francisco Mercado
Rizal (May 11, 1818-Jan. 5, 1898)
who studied Latin and Philosophy
at College of San Jose in Manila.
His mother was Teodora Alonso
(Nov. 8, 1826-August 16,1911)

Saturnina (1850-1913)- nickname
Neneng and married to Manuel T.
Hidalgo of Tanawan, Batangas.
Paciano (1851-1930)- after Joses
execution, he become a combat
general during the Philippine
revolution. He died an old
bachelor but with 2 children by
his mistress Severina Decena.
Narcisa (1852-1939)-nickname
Sisa and maried Antonio Lopez, a
aschool teacher of Morong.
Olimpia (1855-1887)- nickname
Ypia and married Silvestre
Ubaldo, a telegraph operator
from Manila.
Lucia (1857-1919)- married to
Mariano Herbosa who died of
cholera but was denied of

Maria (1859-1945)-nickname
Biang, she married to Daniel
Faustino Cruz of Bian, Laguna.
Jose (1861-1896)- nickname Pepe
and had a son name Francisco by
Josephine Bracken.
Concepcion (1862-1865)nickname Concha, died at the
age of 3 and was the 1st sorrow of
Rizal.
Josefa (1865-1945)- nicknamed
Panggoy, she died an old maid at
the aged of 80.
Trinidad (1868-1951) nicknamed
Trining, she also died an old maid
at the aged of 83.

Rizal Ancestry
Rizals blood is a mixture of Negrito,
Indonesian, Malay, Chinese,
Japanese, and Spanish.
His ancestor on his fathers side was
Domingo Lameo (Lamco/Lam-co in
other references), a Chinese
immigrant from Fukien City,
Changcow China who arrived in
Manila about 1690 and married a
Chinese Christian girl named Ines de
la Rosa and assumed the surname
Mercado (market) in 1731.
Doa Teodoras family descended
from Lakan Dula of Tondo (the last
native king of Tondo). She also had a
blood from her Japanese ancestry
(Eugenio Ursua) who married a
Filipina named Benigna.

Southern part of Calamba lies
Mount Makiling, where there
are several hot springs. Laguna
de Bay is located on the
eastern part of the town.
Calambas name came from
the word kalan-banga which
means water container.

Calamba
Barely 3 years old, Rizal learned the
alphabet from his mother. It was said
that Doa Teodora was Rizals first
teacher.
Jose grew up as a devout Catholic. He
participated in daily prayers such as
the Angelus. He was also able to read
the Bible (in Spanish) at early age of 5.
He prayed rosary almost every night.
Jose was 8 when he 1st visited the
Antipolo Church. This was his mothers
pilgrimage when the latter promised to
the blessed Virgin should she and her
child survive the ordeal of delivery
which nearly caused her life.
Jose loved to walk in the town specially
at night and was usually accompanied
by his aya (nurse aid).

ancestors and parents.
From Malayan ancestors- love
for freedom, innate desire to
travel and indomitable courage.
From Chinese ancestor- somber
personality, prudence, fortitude,
and affection for children.

sensitivity to insult, and valor for
ladies.
From his father- profound sense
of self-respect, love for work and
the habit of independent
thinking.

Refers to places, associates and events
that affect the nature of a person.
From Paciano- moral values and passion
for education.
From Tiya Jose Alberto- artistic
influence; Jose carved an image of The
Virgin Mary on a piece of batikuling
(Philippine hardwood) with his pocket
knife.
From Tiyo Manuel- helped develop his
frail body through physical workout,
including horseback riding and
wrestling.
From Tiyo Gregorio- reading books, The
Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander
Dumas, universal History by Cesar
Cantu, and the Travels in the Philippines
by Dr. Feodor Jagor.

rational sincerity.

Sorrowful events in
the early life of
Rizal
The Death of Concha in 1865
The imprisonment of his
mother (who was force to walk
50km) because of malicious
charge and was put to prison
for 2 and half years until her
acquittal by the Manila Royal
Audencia (Supreme Court).
The Spanish abuses and
cruelties which he witnessed.
Execution of Fathers Mariano
Gomez, Jose Burgos, and
Jacinto Zamora in 1872.

June, 1869, Paciano and Jose
left Calamba to study under
Maestro Justiniano Aquino
Cruz.
During this time, Jose was
laughed because of his wrong
answer by Pedro. And during
their siesta break, he
challenge Pedro to a brawl
and prevailed (thanks to his
Tiyo Manuel).
Jose finished his elementary
studies in 1870.
