INTRODUCTION
During our presentation tonight, we
will introduce our plans for a new
tourism product titled Sail Cayman.
Although new to some of us, it is
important to note that this was a
regular sporting event on our islands
in the early twentieth century.
Our plan is to expand our sports
tourism, by including a week of
sailing competitions throughout the
three islands.
Tied to our culture, we feel that this
event would enhance our beach and
sea actives and add diversity to our

HISTORY
Catboats were first crafted in
Cayman Brac in 1904 by Daniel
Jervis.
The Terror was the name of the
first catboat built by Daniel
Jervis.
When the Terror first set sail,
everyone was so impressed that
they began constructing
catboats for the other residence
of Cayman Brac.
The seamen of Cayman Brac
soon became skilled at building
catboats for themselves and
other islanders.

HISTORY CONTD
Surrounded by sea, several years ago the main method
of transportation for the Caymanian people and their
goods was by sea.
As a result, the locals learnt to build Schooners for
transporting trade and trips aboard, and Catboats for
fishing and travelling along the cost and between
islands.
Soon, the sport of Schooner and Catboat sailing rivalry
begun, as it became customary to see such races along
Hog Sty Bay and in the sister islands.
Fun Fact: Catboats were painted blue to minimize the glare of
the sun on the sea being reflected back into the fishermens
eyes, as well as to blend into the water, so the turtlers could
get closer to their prey.

HISTORY CONTD
Each year, vessels from the Brac would make their journey
over to Grand Cayman for the duration of the Easter
weekend for the event.
Some of the Schooner vessels also known to race during
this event were, the Cimboco, Lady Slater and Goldfield.
This event became a big entertainment for locals and
visitors alike, as the blowing of the conch shell signified the
arrival of the catboats.
Eventually, as time progressed and the islands became
further developed, the Catboat Regatta became just
another memory in our history books. Of course until
present time with the most recent race taking place in
Morgans Harbor in 2015.

SWOT ANALYSIS
Strengths
Close proximity to North America, which would allow the
product rapidly grow.
Good transportation methods to the islands by air and sea.
Three islands with deep costal waters, prevailing trade
winds, and protected reefs for small craft events.
Necessary facilities, such as Yacht Clubs, accommodations,
bars and restaurants, ground transportation etc.
The expertise to help manage the event, such as Sailing
Clubs and the Olympic Committee.
Relevant emergency personnel can provide safety and
security for participants, such as the Joint Marine Unit and
Health Services Authority.
Safe environment for visitors to stay.

SWOT ANALYSIS
Weaknesses
The sister islands do not have proper
berthing facilities and protected reef
harbors in the Brac maybe too shallow
for some vessels.
Although the North Sound is protected
harbor for some large vessel, it maybe a
challenge to reach the Yacht Clubs for
moorings.
Challenge with transportation to the
sister islands by sea and air for
participants and their equipment in

SWOT ANALYSIS
Opportunities
Build consumer relationships:
Having a new product such as sailing, would enhance and
grow our tourism product and allow visitors to join and
experience our culture.
Sports tourism is rapidly growing around the globe, and
including sailing would only expand our ability to grow with
the market.
Hosting such an event would undoubtedly make our islands
better known, and help promote Cayman as a safe and fun
place to visit all year round and to leave an imprint that we
are Cayman Kind.
Now that the Cruise and Cargo facilities are in the
development stages, we could include berthing for sailing
vessels which is a fantastic opportunity to encourage
Nautical Tourism on a whole.

SWOT ANALYSIS

Threats

Weather will be a hinder to

the racing events, but if it is
held outside the hurricane
season it could be managed.
Hence why we suggested the
week of the Easter weekend.
Competition within the region
could limit our ability to grow
the market. Especially in
neighboring islands like
Bermuda, who is also known
for their pristine waters.

MARKETING STRATEGIES
DOT (Department of Tourism) would be the main
facilitator and marketer for the event.
Through the Internet and social media, DOT could easily
market and promote the eventwith little to no costs.
Website
Facebook
Twitter
Instagram
In addition to the DOT, stakeholders would also play a
tremendous part in the marketing strategy as they have
the ability to expand the event just by their household
name or community/public involvement.

ECONOMIC BENEFITS
According to the World Tourism
Organization, Sports Tourism contributes
millions of dollars worldwide.
To be more specific, according to
Australias tourism information, sailing
events contributed about $6,846,400.00
to the economy in 2014.
This means that everyone wins, as job
opportunities would be created, and
more revenue would be generated for
hotels, yacht clubs, restaurants, airlines
etc., and there would be a high return on
investments.
Although the Cayman Islands would not
be as established as Australia in hosting
this event, we estimate that the
economy would receive millions of

CONCLUSION
Cayman Regatta was the name of the previous
sailing boating events back in he mid 1900s, it has
since been halted; however, there has been recent
sail boating activities as recent as 2015.
Due to there being some presence of catboat sailing
in Cayman, it would naturally take off in a big way
with the push towards an International sailing event.
Sail Cayman will not only bring back the essential
culture of Cayman, but it will spark the interest of
the community and breathe new life into the
Cayman Islands once again.
