INTRODUCTION
Teaching can be a very stressful job.
Why some teachers quit from teaching profession?
i.

Experienced teachers- the job (teaching) is too demanding, need to

grade piles of papers, need to prepare lesson plans before teaching,
need to have contact with the parents, and they are also responsible in
increasing of workloads.

ii.

New teachers- lack of communication, support, and they often feel

isolated and being unaware from what is expected from them.

.Teacher must be flexible to handle the problems that occur.

There are few causes lead to stress:
i. Students misbehaviour;
.Bullying, absenteeism, and disrespectfulness.
.3 categories of misbehaviour:
a) Heavy offense: bringing drugs to school, rude against teacher.
b) Moderate offense: inappropriate attire.
c) Light offense:
ii. Workloads;
.High job demand, increased environmental exposures, and overtime work has increased
the stress level (Rusli, Edimansyah, and Naing (2006)).

iii. Interpersonal relationship;

.Tense interpersonal relationship between staff can be declared as the
environmental stressor.

& SELANGOR
There are few causative factors of stress:
i.

Workloads;

.In order our Malaysian education system wants to achieve the target of Kurikulum
Bersepadu Sekolah Menengah (KBSM), teachers receive additional workloads in
preparing the lesson plans, teaching aids and etc.
.This changes need a teacher to be good in giving the knowledge, and they also have to
educate the students in the area of physical, emotion, intellects and attitudes.

school which the principal fails to be a good leader.
.The teacher may become the victim of management weaknesses and will lead them
into their unsatisfactory of school management.

iii. Student disciplinary problem

.Teachers need to be aware of every single problem faced by the students
including disciplinary problem.
.Teachers might feel stressed because they have to face too many disciplinary
challenges and social problem.
.At the same time, teachers need to educate the students on every aspect.

MELAKA & NEGERI SEMBILAN
In year 2001, Ministry of Education introduces the Education Development
2001-2010.
The motives of this scheme:
To enhance knowledge, science, and technology culture;
To increase life-long learning;
To become the educational centre that can be provide excellent
education;
To increase Malaysia educations prestige in international level.

There are few sources of stress:

i.

Pupil misbehaviour;

.Most significant cause of stress is pupils reluctance to follow instructions,

followed by pupils impolite behaviour, and handling problematic pupils.
ii. Workloads;
.Teachers responsibility for pupils success in examination was the main
workload, followed by administrative work, too much work in single time.

iii. Recognition;
.Lack of recognition of work from administrator that contributed to
teachers stress, followed by poor promotion prospects, and lack of
encouragement toward better administrators.
iv. Time and resources difficulties;
.Having a large class was determined as the most significant stress factor
followed by difficulty in completing syllabus in the time available, and lack
of material resources in meeting new educational basis.

EFFECTS
Negative outcome will reduce the physical and mental health of the stress
affected person.
Six strongest disturbing signs are: hardly disconnection of job from private
life, allowing social and professional performance to worsen, abnormal
sleeping, dealing with students only as a scholar, unfriendly gesture, and
acting self protective towards co-workers and students. (Fimian & Santoro,
1983)
Stress leads to rash behaviour, restlessness emotional explosions, extreme
eating or loss of hunger, taking medicines, excessive drinking or smoking, nonappearance in work, and unsteady service history. (Wilkinsons, 1988)

Depression, chest pains, and physical collapses were reported by some

teachers as reactions to stress. (King & Peart, 1992)
Teachers experience the nervousness, anxiety, and exhaustion resulted
by stress. (Marais, 1992)
If the stress level continuously increasing, our educational institutions
will be harmed.
The number of teachers quit from teaching profession will increase.

SUGGESTIONS
Teachers should be positive in facing all those challenges which this will
help them to reduce their stress level.
Society also must play their roles which they can give their supports to
help the teachers.
Students must give cooperation to the teachers so that the teachers
can release some burden and stress.
Teachers can involve in outdoor activities to release stress.

CONCLUSION
In order to overcome the stress of teaching, teachers themselves need to
know how to handle all the problem that they faced. Besides, students,
parents, and society also need to cooperate with the teachers so that the
burden of the teachers could be lessen and the teachers will not stress
and the problem of health can be avoid.
