Personal Review
This program is extremely appropriate when it comes to multisensory
learning. The books are very illustrative, teaching not only the sounds, but letting the child touch and feel the sound, hear it, see it, and say it. This is an effective, multi-sensory approach to phonics that uses all types of learning styles (visual, auditory and tactile) into a creative and fun program. The sounds can be taught even by motion, for example take into consideration the letter sound S, which is identified with the arm movement like a snake. The videos are also very interesting and amusing. The videos include entertaining characters (a mouse, a snake, a bee, and a computer). The mouse and the computer know how to read and they are teaching the bee and the snake how to read. The bee and the snake struggle with some skills and are often encouraged by the other characters. I found this very positive.Although, it turns a little bit hard to show the videos to children who are non-native English speakers. They find it hard to understand the story head to tail. It it very important that the program does not teach the letters A, B, C, in the alphabetical order. The children are able to read words even from their first day if they are taught how to read the letters in words.
Childrens response to Jolly Phonics
The first thing when I enter the classroom everyday, my children ask me: What letter sounds do you teach us today? It feels rewarding to see the sincere good reaction of 20-30 little students, who wait anxiously for you to teach them English. At the beginning of this school year, I offered the pupils books to a first grade class, where I teach English once a week. For the rest classes I decided to photocopy the pupils book, due to the fact that the costs of such class material are quite high for my students possibilities. Yet, we found a way to apply the Jolly Phonics program. Now, I am teaching English at preschool to first grade classes. I even apply the methods of reading the letter sounds to second grade students, who at this time have improved their reading skills. Also, second grade students can read more easily the Green Level Story Books rather than the preschool and first grade ones.
Childrens response to Jolly Phonics
Moreover, all my students have accepted the Jolly Phonics
program very well, they easily learn how words are read, the letter sounds. Students also enjoy the words and letter flashcards. I personally use them every class in order to reinforce their previous knowledge. Yet, the their most favourite tool is the TalkingPen. They ask for it every class, enjoying also the songs.
