Filipino Culture

*What is

Culture?

*Culture is an organization of

phenomena that is dependent upon

symbols, phenomena which include
acts (patterns of behavior); objects
(tools and things made by tools);
ideas (beliefs, knowledge); and
sentiments (attitudes, values). In this
sense culture means the entire way
of life of people and everything
learned and shared by people in
society.
(Leslie White)

*Culture is defined as the

set of learned behaviors,

beliefs, attitudes, values
and ideals that are
characteristics of a
particular society or
population. (Ember, 1999)

*Culture is the learned

norms, values, knowledge,

artifacts, language, and
symbols that are constantly
communicated among
people who share a common
way of life.
(Calhoun, et.al., 1994)

*Culture is a defining

feature of a persons
identity, contributing
to how they see
themselves and the
groups with which
they identify.

*What is

Language?

*Language is the medium

for expressing and

embodying other
phenomena. It expresses
the values, beliefs and
meanings which members
of a given society share by
virtue of their
socialization into it.

*Relationship

between Culture
and Language

*The learning of culture

takes place through
language.

*Language is an integral part of

culture and human culture
cannot exist without it.

*All human societies have

languages.

*The structure of a language

determines the way in which

speakers of that language
view the world.

*Language

allows culture
to develop by
freeing people
to move
beyond their
immediate
experiences

*In the absence of language,

we would have a very rough

time with communicating
dates and times. Because of
language, we are able to
plan activities and events
with one another.

*Language
allows
culture to
exist

*Language is intrinsic to the

expression of culture. It is
the means by which culture
and its traditions and shared
values may be conveyed and
presented.

* Language is

fundamental to
cultural identity.
This is so for people
everywhere. For
Bininj, their unique
world is expressed in
their language. For
this reason, it is
important that
people keep their
own language alive.

*Within multilingual societies,

the maintenance of the

language of the various ethnic
and cultural groups is critical
for the preservation of cultural
heritage and identity.

The
understanding
of a culture
and its people
can be
enhanced by
the knowledge
of their
language.

*Language is arguably the most

important component of culture

because much of the rest of it is
normally transmitted orally. It is
impossible to understand the
subtle nuances and deep
meanings of another culture
without knowing its language
well.

* As languages

disappear, cultures
die. The world
becomes inherently
a less interesting
place, but we also
sacrifice raw
knowledge and the
intellectual
achievements of
millennia

*The loss of language means the

loss of culture and identity. In
many societies throughout
history, the suppression of the
languages of minority groups
has been used as a deliberate
policy in order to suppress
those minority cultures.
