Conclusion

WHAT IS HOT WORK?

Hot work is any work that involves
burning, welding, using fire- or sparkproducing tools, or that produces a source
of ignition.

EXAMPLES OF HOT WORK

WELDING
Join together (metal parts)
by heating the surfaces to
the point of melting with a
blowpipe, electric arc, or
other means, and uniting
them by pressing,
hammering, etc.

BRAZING
Brazingis a metaljoining process whereby
a filler metal is heated
above melting point and
distributed between two
or more close-fitting
parts by capillary action.

GRINDING
Grinding is a subset of
cutting, as grinding is a true
metal-cutting process.

Purpose to remove material,

creating a very fine finishes
and very accurate
dimensions

HEATING

SAND-BLASTING

RISK FROM HOT WORK

Exposure to smoke, fumes and toxic gases

Fire explosion due to leakage of gas
Skin burn due to hot surfaces
Eye injury due to UV light
Bodily injury by flying particles
11

SAFETY MEASURES OF HOT WORK

1. Prior to any hot work

being performed on a
new task, a risk
assessment shall be
conducted and the need
for a hot work permit
established.

12

SAFETY MEASURES OF HOT WORK

2. All Equipment/tools shall be inspected to ensure safe

operation. Do not use defective machinery until it has

been repaired and tested.

3. Make sure there are no flammable materials near the

work area.

4. Ensure all emergency equipment is readily available,

accessible and in good condition.

13

5. PROPER PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Keep clothing clean and free of oils,
greases and combustible
contaminants.
Wear long sleeved apparel
No pockets to avoid collecting sparks
or hot metal.
Wear a fire resistant Safety Boots.
Wear fire resistant gloves
When welding wear a welders face
shield.
When grinding a full face shield shall
be worn.

14

SAFETY MEASURES OF HOT WORK

6. Only personnel who have been properly trained and
qualified may operate the equipment.

7. Fire watch shall be appointed to

oversee the hot

work activities at the designated areas as specified in
the permit to work.

8. Equipment used shall meets the standards set by a

nationally recognized authority. All electrical welding

requires grounding.

15

SAFETY MEASURES OF HOT WORK

9. Protective screens shall be provided at workplace to

protect public in the vicinity of a welder from harmful

rays.

10.Flashback arresters shall be provided by an approved

device that will prevent flame from passing into the fuelgas system.

11.Upon closure of permit, fire watch is required to monitor

the hot work area for any possibility of fire built up and
shall ensure housekeeping of the work area had been
conducted.

16

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, we have clearly covered the
definition of hot work, the risk that can
caused from hot work and safety measures
of hot work activity.
