Presentation on H-Type Tight Lock

Coupler

MAIN CONTENTS :-

1. Main Components of H-Type Coupler.

2. Difference between H-type Coupler &
Conventional E type Coupler.
3. Technical & Operational Problems in H-type
coupler.

4. H-type coupler holding status in ELS,ET

6. Final comments.

MAIN COMPONENTS OF H-TYPE COUPLER.

COUPLER.
H Type

E Type

Supporting device for coupler body consists of 4 preloaded

compression spring. This device supports coupler weight.
With deterioration of spring loading it may cause
downward shift of coupler.

No such arrangement is provided to

support coupler body .

MAJOR DIFFERENCES BETWEEN H-TYPE & E-TYPE

COUPLER.
H Type
( locking arrangement)

E Type
(Locking arrangement)

Locking arrangement is through clevis.

Their is arrangement to lock lifting

lever by means of locking pin.

Locking process

No arrangement to lock lifting lever.

Securing key is used to lock operating handle

Unlock condition

Lock condition

Locking arrangement is through

lifting lever.

Lock condition

No special key used , the locking

principle is simple.

DOUBLE ACTING DRAFT GEAR IN H TYPE

The draft gear is a double acting

device for energy absorption
during coupling and during
service. The device is designed to
fit into the draft gear pocket of the
loco and absorbs the dynamic
energy in both draw and buff
modes.

TECHNICAL & OPERATIONAL

PROBLEMS IN H TYPE COUPLER.
Deterioration of spring loading of supporting
device for coupler causes downward shift of
coupler.
No arrangement to lock the lifting lever, only
visual check has to be done by pointsman to
ensure that tell tale area is clear.
Thus operational competency of points man is
involved to ensure safe coupling, otherwise
coupler may get opened (Based On Input received
from other Railways).

H-TYPE COUPLER HOLDING STATUS IN ELS,ET

At ELS/ET total 09 loco were provided with H type coupler. Due to problem of uncoupling
they were replaced by conventional type coupler s. De tails given below:SN

FINAL COMMENTS
Advantages:

1. H type Tight lock used in LHB

coach.
2. Compatibility with E type coupler.
3.Anti-climbing feature in built. This
feature is to prevent damage to life &
property during accident.
It prevents
climbing of coaches in
collisions and derailment .

Disadvantages:
Sometimes uncoupling
proper locking.

CONCLUSION :

1) Vide Item no.16 of 37 th MSG meeting held at Shimla, the

recommendation of Introduction of H type tight lock coupler
with soft Draft gear in Passenger Electric Locomotives has been
accepted by the Rlwy board. It was decided that these couplers
should be used on passenger locomotives and to be provided by
POH workshops/ sheds during Major schedule.
2) In the said Meeting, NR pointed out the problem of fitment of
Draft gear of M/S faiveley make in WAP-7 type of Locomotives &
the drooping problem of M/S Faiveley make couplers.
3) Board directed all Railways to report feedback for such
couplers to RDSO MP & Electrical dte.
