SWEDEN

BY: FAITH SUTHERLAND

CAPITAL CITY AND FLAG

The capital city of Sweden is
Stockholm.
Stockholm is one of the world's
most beautiful capitals. It is
located along the Baltic Sea in
southeastern Sweden.
Stockholm is the most
populous out of any other
Swedish city.

Here is a picture of Sweden's

flag.

PRIMARY LANGUAGE AND RELIGION

The primary language of Sweden is
Swedish.
Every now and then, Swedes like to
get the chance to speak English.
There are close to 200 languages
spoken in Sweden today because of its
society growing more diverse.

There are a few different types of religions in Sweden, but the main
religion is Lutheran.

Christianity was established in Sweden, but not until the year 1060.

Before the 11 century, norse paganism was generally followed by

many.

TOURIST ATTRACTION
Drottningholm Palace is one
of the top, if not the top,
tourist attractions in Sweden.
This palace is the residence
of the Swedish Royal Family.
Drottningholm Palace is
located on the island of
Lovn, one of
Sweden'sbeautiful islands.

TOURIST ATTRACTION
The Vasa Museum is Sweden's
most popular museum.
It attracts around 1 million
visitors annually.
This museum displays the
17th century 64-gun warship
Vasa that sank on a voyage in
1628.

NATIONAL CUISINE
Strmming(herring)is a type
of silver fish found in the
Baltic that many Swedes
prefer breaded and fried.

Swedish meatballs are

served with gravy, boiled
potatoes, lingonberry jam,
and fresh pickled cucumber.

STEREOTYPES
Swedes are all tall. This is not true because not all Swedes
are tall. Although, Swedes are in the top ten for the tallest
men in the world.
Swedes are green. This is true because Swedes are
extremely caring for the environment. They use a system
called "Pant" to recycle materials. "Pant" rewards those who
want to be green.

SUPERSTITIONS
Spit three times if a black cat crosses your path. Swedes
believe that cats can be a psychotic creature, therefore, they
will spit three times after a black cat crosses their path to ward
off evil spirits.
"Pepper, pepper touch wood." Swedes will knock on wood
while saying "pepper, pepper ta itr" to prevent something
nasty from happening to them.
Do not open an umbrella inside. Swedes believe that
opening an umbrella inside will bring serious danger.

HAND GESTURES
Shaking hands is the proper way to meet and greet people in
Sweden, just like in America.
A thumbs up in Sweden is a sign of wishing someone the best
of luck.

BUSINESS CULTURE: ETIQUETTE AND

BODY LANGUAGE
Sweden

United States

When introducing yourself, shake hands

in a firm manner.

In the U.S., people do not always shake

hands when introducing themselves.

Greeting are usually informal in the U.S.

Swedes call everybodyby their first

name no matter their status.

When introducing people, Americans use

professional titles.

Swedes speak only when they have

something important to say.

They keep their body language and hand

gestures to a minimum.
Swedes like to maintain a personal space
when conversing with other people.

Greetings are informal in Sweden.

Americans keep their distance when

conversing.
We use much body language as well as
many hand gestures in the U.S.

There very lightsocial conversation in

America.

BUSINESS CULTURE: RELATIONSHIP

BUILDING
Sweden
Verbal agreements are very
important in Sweden, therefore
you shouldn't take an invitation
too lightly.

When doing business, Swedes

always finish off an agreement
with a handshake.

Swedes discuss issues thoroughly

and for a long period of time when
making a decision, so always be
prepared for much discussion.

United States

Americans are very upfront and

they like to get to the point of a
discussion quickly.

The United States is not a

relationship-based country in the
business culture.

Americans like to get the task done

and get to know people later.

BUSINESS CULTURE: COMMUNICATION

STYLES IN DECISION MAKING
Sweden
Every person has a say when
it comes to decision making
and what everyone says is
valued.
The process of decision
making flows extremely well.

United States
Every person does not have a
say in decision making, which
quickens up the process.
America focuses on what is
wanted and not so much on
how to actually get what is
wanted.

BUSINESS CULTURE: POWER

STRUCTURES IN DECISION MAKING
Sweden
In decision-making, not only
are the leaders of the
company apart of the
process, but also they
include workers in the
company to help.

United States
While making a decision,
there is only discussion
between the top leaders of
the company.

INTERNET PENETRATION RATE/

POPULAR SOCIAL NETWORK SITES
Sweden is number 5 out of the top 50 countries with the
highest internet penetration rates.
Sweden'sinternet penetration rate is 94.8%.
The top three social network sites in Sweden are Facebook,
Instagram, and Twitter.
Facebook is the most popular, but Instagram is coming close
to being the top social network site out of all three.

INDIVIDUALISM VS. COLLECTIVISM

This dimension of Hofstede is most applied to Sweden because
Swedes are caring of the lives and well-being of others and not
just of themselves, which relates them to collectivism.
Unlike Swedes, Americans mostly care for themselves and are
less concerned for others in the country, which is most related
to individualism.
To relate America to Sweden, not all Americans are more
individualistic, but rather on the collectivist side.

LARGE OR SMALL POWER DISTANCE

Both Sweden and the U.S. are a small power distance culture.
Although these countries are small power distance countries,
the leaders still hold the power.
On the other hand, Swedes dislike control, unlike Americans
who like to have a great deal of control.

STRONG OR WEAK UNCERTAINTY

AVOIDANCE
From what I have learned, Sweden has a strong uncertainty
avoidance because Swedes are not risk takers and they avoid
uncertainty when possible.
The United States has a weak uncertainty avoidance because
Americans like to take risks and are encouraged to speak their
minds.
America tolerates deviance, unlike Sweden which does not.

MASCULINITY VS. FEMININITY

Sweden is considered a feminine society.
Swedes keep a good balance of life and work and make sure
everyone is included.
The United States is considered more of a masculine society.
Although, leaders in the U.S., just like leaders in Sweden, view
traditional sex role divisions as stereotypical.
