Why iPads?
Ask an English Teacher

Ask a Math Teacher

In a summer institute, 29 high

school [English] teachers were
trained, using their iPads, to create
a web presence that encouraged
interactive student exploration of
course content through standardsbased activities, tapping into
students already-established world
of multiliteracies (Baker, Isbell,
Wendt & Wilson, 2013, p.64).

A study done at St. Johns Jesuit High

School in Ohio in Geometry had students
using iPads to create visual
representations of their vocabulary terms
and concepts.

The study found that students

grades were higher using the
technology, and teachers increased
the ways in which to integrate
technology into their classrooms.

Students then presented on their findings,

using a particular app to do so. It was a
huge success with researchers, who found
that this iPad project gave students an
outlet to be creative and apply what they
had learned (Ingraham, 2013, p. 30).
Furthermore, The use of multiple
representations in mathematics
classrooms is vital and can help students
shift from procedural understanding to
conceptual understanding, which will
allow them to continue to be successful in
high level mathematics courses
(Ingraham, 2013, p. 31).

Why iPads? (cont.)

Ask a Science Teacher
A study done by Smithsonian researchers
found that students studying the concept
of scale in simulated space in high school
students. With the help of the iPad, they
found that while the traditional
approaches produced no evident gain in
understanding, the iPad classrooms
showed strong gains (Science Teacher,
2014, p. 19).
The authors noted that students similarly
struggle with concepts of scale when
learning ideas in biology, chemistry,
physics, and geology, which suggests that
tablet-based simulations also may be
beneficial for teaching concepts in many
other scientific fields (Science Teacher,
2014, p. 19).
The most compelling statistic to come
from this study is that student
understanding improved with as little as
20 minutes of iPad use (Science Teacher,
2014, p. 19).

Ask a Special Ed.

Teacher
A study involving students with moderate
to complex physical and/or cognitive
disabilities ranging in age from 3 -19
studied their response to iPad usage.
Researchers discovered that iPads
afforded to students of diverse ages new
opportunities for communicating their
ideas through the overlapping yet distinct
roles of touch and gesture (Flewitt,
Kucirkova & Messoer, 2014, p. 113). This
was a profound improvement for those
who otherwise struggled with this
category.
The study also found that students felt a
sense of empowerment when using the
iPads, creating a more collaborative
environment in the classroom (Flewitt,
Kucirkova & Messer, 2014).

What is FCPS Currently

Doing?
Average Student to Technology
Device Ratio is 3.2 to 1
Goal in 2009 was 1:1
BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)
Connectivity issues
Student access issues

How is MCPS Incorporating

Technology?
Beginning in the 2014-15 school year, MCPS
began a multi-year initiative to integrate
iPads and Chromebooks into all schools of the
county (see attachment)
To start, they issued 40,000 devices to grades
3-6 and high school social studies
departments
Each year after that, new grades and content areas
will receive devices (MCPS, 2014)

Some money comes from pre-budgeted

funding, with other years still in need of

Title

Basic Usage and Troubleshooting

Audience

9-12 Teachers

Description

1. Teachers will be shown a demo of how to use an

iPad.
2. Teachers will practice troubleshooting on individual
iPads in the following areas with guidance from the
instructor (About.com, 2015):
- Rebooting, Removing Apps, Settings, Slow, Frozen,
Charging, Screen Rotation, Zooming, Power
problems, Resetting, Connectivity to Apps,
Connectivity to WiFi, Keyboard shortcuts, Safety
controls
3. Review of how to assist students with these issues in

Appropriate Apps for Grade Level

and
Content Area, Part 1

9-12 Teachers

the classroom
1. Instructor will review how to download apps onto
iPad.
2. Instructor will supply resource sites for finding
appropriate apps for teachers classrooms.
3. Teachers will investigate apps that would be
appropriate for their classroom.

Appropriate Apps for Grade Level and

9-12 Teachers

Content Area, Part 2

1. Teachers will complete research and

practice with Apps.
2. Teachers will present the Apps and
their capabilities they plan to use with
the group.

Grant Applications for Technology, Part 1

9-12 Teachers

1. Teachers will be shown different sites

that would be great resources for grants.
2. Teachers will be instructed on how to
properly apply for grants.
3. Teachers will begin research on
technology grants for their classrooms.

Grant Applications for Technology, Part 2

9-12 Teachers

1. Teachers will continue research on

technology grants for their classrooms.
2. By the end of the session, individuals
will discuss with the class what grants
