Plot Overview

About the Author

When Esperanza first got to her new

home, she didnt like it because she
wanted a nice house that she would be
proud to call her own. While she was in
Mango Street she talked to a girl named
Cathy. They were only friends for one
week because her dad had to fly to
France. Then she meet these two girls,
who were sisters, named Lucy and
Rachel. All three of the girls got along
very well and became best friends.
Rachel, Lucy, and Esperanza made many
memories together such as getting a new
bike,meeting new people/friends, and
naming clouds. After a couple of weeks
Esperanzas dad told her that her
grandpa died and it was her responsibility
to tell her siblings. One day Esperanza
met a girl named Sally. Sally was the
same age as Esperanza but she was a
little bit more mature. They got along just
well until one day Sally left Esperanza
with a group of boys alone. After that day
Esperanza stopped being friends with
Sally and started talking to Lucy and
Rachel again.

Historical Context
This novel takes place in the authors
hometown, Chicago. Mango Street is a
poor, Latino neighborhood in the late
1960s. Esperanzas personality is also
based on this neighborhood. She was
seeing that many of the women that lived
there werent as independant as she had
thought. Esperanza started thinking to
herself if she would be as independant as
she is right now when she grows up.
Esperanza has many different
experiences while she is in Mango Street.
This also makes her see things differently
as she is becoming a woman.

Motifs and Symbols

One of the major motifs of the novel is
being independent. Being independent is
an important part of the novel because
Esperanza grew up in a community
where the woman has to listen to what
the man says and takes care of all the
chores. Since her dad gave her mom
some independence, she feels like she
can be completely fine by herself.
Esperanza also thinks that she doesnt
have to follow that stereotype.
