BSS is composed of BSC and BTS, Um is the interface betw
een MS and BTS, Abis is between BTS and BSC, A interface
is between BSC and MSC, while Gb is adopted between BS
C and SGSN.
CN is divided into the CS (Circuit Switched) Domain and th
e PS (Packet Switched) Domain. MSC is CS domain providi
ng voice service, while SGSN and GGSN is the PS domain p
roviding data service.
PCU (Packet Control Unit )is adopted in BSC equipment, w
hich provide packet data service connect to SGSN through

WCDMA including the RAN (Radio Access Network) and t

he CN (Core Network).
CN is divided into the CS (Circuit Switched) Domain and t
he PS (Packet Switched) Domain. UTRAN, CN and UE (Us
er Equipment) together constitute the whole UMTS syste
m
A RNS is composed of one RNC and several NodeBs. The
Iu interface is used between RNC and CN while the Iub i
nterface is adopted between RNC and Node B.
Within UTRAN, RNCs connect with one another through
the Iur interface. The Iur interface can connect RNCs via
the direct physical connections among them or connect
them through the transport network.

LTE-SAE System architecture

An evolved core network, the Evolved Packet Core is at the same time devel
oped, which generally is called System Architecture Evolution (SAE).
The philosophy of the SAE is to focus on the packet-switched domain, and
migrate away from the circuit-switched domain

LTE System architecture

LTE network is composed by UE enhanced NodeB eNode

B and Core Network (SAE: include MME,SGW,PGW), eNodeB is

evolutes by NodeB and RNC of 3GPP R6 version
Uu is the interface between UE and eNodeB; S1 is between eN

odeB and Core Network; S5 is between SGW and PGW, while

X2 is adopted between different eNodeBs.
eNodeB connect to MME and SGW consisting of 2 kinds of S1

interface: S1-MME and S1-U, which carry the control plane sig
naling and user data respectively.

Classification Based on Physical Func

tions

The boards can be classified into five types according to physical functions:

UPB: It functions as the service processing unit of a subrack.

USI: It functions as the interface board of the UPB.

SWU: It functions as the switching unit. Through the base switching plane and fabri
c switching plane, the SWU can implement the function of exchanging the informat
ion in the same subrack and between a subrack and external devices.
SWI: It is the interface board of the SWU and functions as the interface for the com
munications between the SWU and external devices.
SMM: It is the management module of a subrack and can implement the functions
such as device management, sensor/event management, user management, fan b
ox/PDB management, and remote maintenance.
SDM: It records the information such as the subrack information and system perfo
rmance parameters.

Classification Based on Logical Functions (1)

The processor boards of the SGSN9810 can be classified into the following
types according to logical functions:
OMU (Operation & Maintenance Unit)

The OMU is responsible for implementing functions in terms of the configu

ration, maintenance, alarm, and performance of the whole system.
ECU (Enhanced Control Plane Unit)

The ECU is responsible for processing the services associated with the contr
ol plane and implementing the charging function.
EPU (Enhanced Packet forward Unit)

The EPU is responsible for processing the services associated with the user
