HISTORY

A group of dentists gathered for a sole purpose to establish


a professional dental organization in Nepal on 22nd Ashwin
2028 (8th Oct 1971) .

The general meeting of Nepalese dentists formed "Nepal


Dental Society

The meeting formed an a committee under the chairmanship


of late Dr. Basanta Bahadur Rajbhandari which proposed
dental health care program to his Majestys Government
and planned to establish a dental hospital that would
subsequently transform into a dental college .

The society participated in first National Scientific &
Technical Exhibition organized by Royal Nepal Academy of
Science and Technology (RONAST) on 30th Shrawan
2041 (14thAug 1984):

On 26th Asoj, 2041 the society was renamed Nepal


Dental Association .

The association took part in first National Workshop on


Oral Health organized by HMG/N and WHO on 8-12
Poush 2042 (23,27 Dec, 1985).

With the dawn of democratic era, on 29th Bhadra 2047,


Nepal Dental Association was finally registered with
District Administration Office, Kathmandu

The date is since then recognized as the anniversary of


NDA. Since its first anniversary on 29th Bhadra 2048,
the trend began to organize annual general meeting and
issue financial report.

On 22nd Ashad 2048, the Association decided to set
dental library, hold regular clinical meetings, publish dental
bulletin, and establish the dental council. Also the election
was scheduled to elect the executive committee. The
Association always elected the executive committee on
unanimous vote until the election of fifth executive
committee in 2002.
On the occasion of 2nd anniversary, NDA in Sept 1992
published "Dental Bulletin", which could not however continue
after a maiden issue. In the year 1998, NDA started
publishing "Journal of the Nepal Dental Association" annually.
The association has been organizing dental conference and
scientific meeting annually since 1998.

Objectives:

1) Work for the rights and welfare of the professional


dental surgeons, and help improve the dental health
services in Nepal.
2) Help aware people towards dental health and education,
hence conduct necessary dental health awareness
programs and also to inform the public on modern and
scientific approach in dentistry.
3) Co-operation with government on necessary improvement
of dental health service in the country.

4) Help government for promulgating dental Act and dental
council.
5) Maintain professional relationship and acquire membership
of the related international dental organizations.
6) Advice and recommend for the necessary improvements in
the field of dental practice; introduce recent trends and
development in dental practice.
7) Organize training programs, seminar, workshop,
conference regularly related to dental health.

Achievements

NDA became regular member of World Dental Federation


in 2000 and Asia Pacific Dental Federation in 2004 proving
its legitimacy.

NDA has been represented in formation of B.D.S


curriculum for Institute of Medicine (IOM) and in
formation of Dental Chair side Assistant and Dental
Hygienist course for Council for Technical Education and
Vocational Training (CTEVT) on various occasions .

The permanent office of NDA was formed in the year


2003 at Sunrise Homes Lalitpur, by the financial
contribution of late Prof. Tirtha Ratna Bajracharya of
Peoples' Dental College.

It is formed for the functioning of the association,


through the election of the executive committee.

All General members & Life members are eligible to


contest & vote in the election.

The executive members are selected for 2 years time


through the nationwide election

It does work in the field of uplifting the dental


fraternity by organizing dental education for the
professional development from national and international
speakers.

Works with the government body opening up possibilities


and opportunities for further education and government
jobs.

By lobbying with the private sector colleges and


hospitals for newer posts and standard salaries and
dental courses with affordable tuition fees.

By organizing dental awareness programs through camps

By fighting for the genuine rights of its members.

The Association has been felicitating the senior dentists


every year since 2002 to recognize their contribution in
dental service.

NDA has always recommended for more dental units and


jobs for dental surgeons in government service. It has also
recommended for dental faculty in universities and Oral
Health Policy to HMG/N.

In the year 1998, NDA started publishing "Journal of


the Nepal Dental Association" annually.

Fight against illegal dental practice (quackery) and


dental malpractice continues

NDA has been working relentlessly in well being of


dental professions and dentistry as a whole and at the
same time they are well concerned with the dental
health needs of Nepalese people and their upliftment.

Journal of Nepal Dental Association (JNDA) is a biannual


scientific journal published by the Nepal Dental
Association (NDA). All efforts are being made to make
the JNDA into an indexed, peer-reviewed, open-access,
international dental journal.

JNDA stands as a forum from which the researches


conducted in various disciplines in dentistry, the reviews
done, novel and unique cases which we encounter during
our professional career can be made available to our
readers.
