Detailed magazine analysis of classic

rock magazine

By Chloe Tierney-Martin

Masthead: A section of the masthead is covered by the main

image which suggests the magazine is already well known and
doesnt need to be the main attraction on the front cover. The
masthead is in a white font with a clear and easy to read
typography which stereotypes the target audience to be
masculine and older as the colours are very dull and not
energetic. The masthead contains starts on either side of the
word classic this connotes that the information and music
produced in this magazine is very special and unique. The
word rock is in a larger font than the word classic which makes
it stands out more this gives a clear give away on what the
genre and sub-genre of the magazine is.

Mise-en-scene: All three artists portray aggression on their

faces suggesting that the aggression is shown through the
music they produce too. The clothes they are wearing
represents grunge music as they are worn out and distressed
as Chris Cornell is pictured wearing ripped jeans. It also
represents the way stereotypes of grunge music fans would
dress as all three artists are wearing worn out casual clothing.

Rule of Thirds: The three artists David Ghrol (left), Chris

Cornell(middle) and Eddie Vedder (right) all appear in the
centre thirds which is where the readers eye will be drawn
first. Although all three artists are seen first Chris Cornell is
the main attraction as he is pushed forward. The rest of the
coverlines are towards the right and left hand side in the
outer thirds which suggests to the reader they are not a key
feature on the front cover.

Cover lines: The rest of the cover lines on the front

cover are of a much smaller font which decreases
their importance as they will be one of the last thing
the readers will see especially as the typography is
written in a dull colour decreasing the visibility even
more. One cover line says In their own words this
will attract the target audience because they will feel
they are directly receiving information off the artists
and the cover line.

Barcode: The barcode is in the bottom right hand corner

not taking up any essential space. The price is very
expensive which is why it is so small as only dedicated
classic rock fans buy the magazine so they will already
know the price.

Niche Market/target audience:

The niche target audience is males of the age 30-55 due to
the artists featured on and in the magazine. These fans of
the magazine would have grew up listening to artists
featured in the magazine. There is also a wider target
audience which is males but the ages range from 16-55. A
younger generation will be interested in this magazine if
they are interested in older music.

Direct Address: In the main image Chris Cornell who is

pictured centred is using direct address as he is looking directly
down the camera lens this creates a feeling of intimacy with the
readers and the artists. This represents grunge artists to
connect with their fans through their music.

Mode of Address: Grab quotes are used to speak directly

to the audience which creates a feeling of intimacy. The
artists are already so famous they do not need any more
recognition.

Target Audience Profile/lifestyle: The target audience will fit

into the social classes C1, B and A as the price of the magazine
can be considered expensive to some. The ethnicity of the
target audience will be predominantly white British as the
artists featured on the front cover are of that ethnicity. The
target audience will also be purchasing this magazine not to
learn about rock music as they will be already be dedicated fans

Colour Scheme: The magazine front cover features a

house style which is when the same colour scheme is used
throughout the magazine. The colours used are red, white
and brown-black colours. These colours represent the target
audience who are of an older audience so they wont be
wanting to see bright, energetic, in your face colours they
will be wanting calm colours that are not overpowering. The
colours represent what type of rock music this issue of the
magazine is offering as these colour complement grunge
music as grunge music has a slow and sludgy sound which
the readers could guess by looking at the dull colour
scheme.

Genre: The genre of this magazine is rock as we can tell from the
name of the magazine. Another give away is the main cover line
grunge "as grunge is a type of rock music understand what grunge
means. The main cover line is in a red blocked cracked font which is very
eye catching to the readers as the rest of the colours on the magazine
are very dull. This suggests that the sub-genre grunge is very dominant
story in this particular issue of the classic rock magazine. The cracked
font gives a rough aesthetic texture to what grunge music is actually
like. This represents the stereotypes of grunge fans as to be distressed
and listening to this type of music is there escapism.

Main image: The main image is a medium-long shot of the artists David
Ghrol (left), Chris Cornell(middle) and Eddie Vedder (right) who are all
from different grunge bands. The facial expressions on each of the artists
represent the meaning of grunge music as David Ghrol looks energetic
suggesting there is a lively aspect to grunge music. Chris Cornell and
Eddie Vedder are pulling a quite serious facial expression which suggests
the dominant theme in grunge music is that it is quite complex. Chris
Cornell is the main focal point in the main image as the use of the back
lighting emphasises him which implies that majority of the double page
spread will be about him. The three artists have all been photographed
separately and been photoshopped together which is why we dont get a
collectiveness feel when we look at the main image, this has been done
to create a scenario of what a grunge band would look like.

Anchorage: The main cover line grunge is anchored in front of

the main image of the three grunge artists. This represents the
genre of the magazine because without the main cover line
being anchored to the main image the readers would have no
perspective as to who these artists are.

Main Image: The main image is a long shot of

grunge artists in a circle holding their hands up
together. The use of the back lighting focuses on the
artists clothing rather than there facial expression.
Main heading/Title: The main heading sits behind the
The reason why
main image. The main heading says "pearl jam" part of the
main heading is hid by the main image. This suggests that
the band is all ready very well-known so doesn't need to be
the main feature on the contents page. It also represents
that the target audience are dedicated fans of the sub-genre
grunge as they can guess who the artists are even with the
main heading partially covered.
Sub-headings: The nine subheadings take up the majority of
the space of the right hand side this is to grab the readers
attention. The sub-headings are also there to make it clear and
easy to read to the target audience as they are of a older
audience.
House style: The house style of the
magazine represents grunge music. The
colour scheme of the magazine is the
same throughout the whole magazine. The
use of the same colours white, black, grey
and red represent the target audience who
are of an older audience. This is because
the colours are dull and calming which an
older target audience would want to see.
The colour scheme also represents the
genre as the colours used give a
distressed feel which is a key theme within
Masthead: There is no masthead on
grunge music
the contents page because classic rock
magazine is already a well established
magazine so the readers do not need a
constant reminder of what magazine
they are reading. This also represents
the target audience to be dedicated and
regular fans of the magazine because
they don't need a reminder of what
magazine they are reading.

Columns: The layout of the

magazine is in columns which
makes the magazine appear
sophisticated and professional to
the target audience as it is
easier to read and appears neat.
Anchor: The main headline
anchors the
main image
because it tells the readers
who the people in the main
image are. As pearl jam are an
older rock band and the
secondary target audience is a
younger
generation
the
anchorage gives the readers a

males ranging from the age 3055. This is because the colour
scheme used are stereotypically
male colours, the artists pictured
in the main image are male and
the age of these artists are
around the same age as the
readers. The puff "whats on your
free CD" represents the target
audience because they are of an
older audience will be interested
in a CD as they would have
grown up listening to CD's rather
than a younger audience who

an older generation.
Brand Identity: Classic
Rock brand identity is a
British magazine dedicated
to rock music. The magazine
focuses
on
established
bands that date back to the
1960s. This represents the
target audience as they are
an older audience so more
than likely these bands were
there childhood favourites.

Page numbers: The page

numbers
are
next
to
pictures
and
certain
articles
to
make
it
accessible for the target
audience as they are an
older audience rather than
reading
through
the
magazine. This means the
target audience can go
straight to the stories they
desire
making
the
magazine more appealable

Date/issue
number: The date
and issue number are
a
conventional
aspect on a contents
page as the target
audience will expect
to see it as it keeps
them up to date with
the issues of the
magazine.

Mode of Address/Language used:

The mode of address in this
magazine is informal as we can tell
from the layout of the magazine and
the grab quotes used such as
"whats on your free CD". The use of
it being a question creates a feeling
of intimacy with the reader as if it
were a conversation.

Rule of thirds: The main image takes up

the majority of the thirds which suggests
the grunge band pearl jam are a key
featured story in this magazine as the
readers eye will be focused on the main
image.
Mise en scene: The clothing pearl jam
band members are clothed in a certain
way which represents the stereotypes of
grunge music and grunge music itself.
The artists are photographed wearing
casual clothes with ripped jeans which
show a scruffy look. This represents the
stereotypes of grunge music as this is
what people would expect grunge fans to
look like and it represents grunge music
itself as the clothes they are wearing
show a distressed look which is key
theme in grunge music.

Quotations/Grab quotes: The main

image is anchored by a grab quote which
gives the reader a perspective of the
main image as it suggests the caption
relates to him. The grab quote is written
in a white font against a dull background.
The use of the contrasting colours
makes the caption stand out to the
readers. The pull quote is a rhetorical
device which automatically engages
the reader as it makes them think of
possible answers to the question

Main Image: The main image is a close up

shot of Chris Cornell which fills most of the
double page spread. Chris Cornell is
photographed in an aggressive pose. The
aggressive stance suggests that the readers
should
feel
intimidated
which
is
a
representation of how Grunge/Rock music
makes its target audience feel. The tribal
themed necklace around Chris Cornell'
connotes
animalistic
imagery.
The
background of the image is empty/basic
with no background textures; this brings this
makes the readers completely focus on Chris
Cornell.

Font and type size: The font is written in a classic style

typography which represents the target audience as it
shows the authority and prestige associated with the
house style of Classic Rock' and the sub-genre grunge.

Large letter start of article (drop

cap): The drop capital is used to
entice the reader to start reading from
the beginning of the article.

By line: The by line

gives credit to the
writer. The by line is
written in a red font
this emphasises the
importance of the
author.
Mode of Address/Language: The mode of
address in this magazine is informal as
Chris Cornell is using direct address as he
is looking directly at the camer

Colours: The colours on the double

spread
are:
red
white
and
black/grey. These colours are the
same
throughout
the
whole
magazine so they follow the house
style of the magazine. Theseolours
represent what type of rock music
this issue of the
magazine is
offering
as
these
colour
complement grunge music as
grunge music has a slow and
sludgy sound which the readers
could guess by looking at the dull
colour
scheme.
Use
of space: Chris Cornell fills up
most of the double page spread
suggesting that the whole article is
dominantly about him. This represents
grunge music in the sense that Chris
Cornell is very popular looked up to by
other artists and fans. Chris Cornell' face
itself covers up a lot of space so the
readers can see his facial expressions.
Chris Cornell has an angry facial
expression this represents grunge music
as it sounds quite harsh/angry to listen
to.

Branding:
Classic
Rock
brand identity is a British
magazine dedicated to rock
music.
The
magazine
focuses
on
established
bands that date back to the
1960s. This represents the
target audience as they are
an older audience so more
than likely these bands were
there childhood favourites.
How image and text are
integrated: The captions on
the images give the readers
perspective
on
what
the
meaning of the images are.
The captions also inform the
readers on information they
possibly didn't know before.
The rest of the images on the
double page spread are of a
smaller
scale
and
are
positioned at the bottom. They
have a white border around
them which makes them stand
out from the main image. The
images follow the house style
of the magazine as they are
grayscale.
The
secondary
images are positioned off
centre which could possibly
represent the un-perfect nature
of grunge.

Column width and positioning:

The text is written in columns to
make it easily readable to the
reader. It also written in columns
so the text doesn't overpower the
main image due to there being so
much of it. The space in-between
the columns is quite large,
however it contains a line accent
to fill space and could be said to
connote the mature theme of the
house style.

Profile/target
audience:The
target
audience for this magazine
is males ranging from the
age 30-55. This is because
the artists featured on the
front cover are male and of
the same age so the
readers can create a
relationship with them as
they have something in
common. The quote "Are
the grunge generation the
classic rock fans of today"
suggests that the target
audience listened to these
artists in their childhood
and due to changing
society grunge music has
been reinvented to be
classic rock music.

Design/Overall
impression:
The
design and overall
impression you get
from the double page
spread is very dull and
doesn't
make
you
necessarily
feel
happy/positive when
you look at it. This
represents
grunge
music because due to
the punk rock and
heavy metal nature of
grunge music when
you listen to it, you
get
a
sense
of
distress.
