WHAT IS HEAT
EXCHANGER ?
Heat exchanger is an equipment that helps in the exchange of heat between
two fluids that are at different temperature while keeping them from mixing
with each other. It differs from mixing chamber that it does not allow to two
fluids to mix they are separated by a wall.
Or
A heat exchanger is a heat-transfer equipment that is used for transfer of
internal thermal energy between two or more fluids available at different
temperatures. In most heat exchangers, the fluids are separated by a heattransfer surface, and ideally they do not mix.
Common examples of heat exchangers familiar to us in day-to-day use are
automobile radiators, condensers, evaporators, air pre heaters, and oil coolers.

APPLICATION OF HEAT
EXCHANGER
Heat exchangers are used in the following application

1.Power plant
2.Petroleum
3.Heating, ventilating, refrigeration and air conditioning system
(HVRAC)
4.Heat recovery system.
5.Chemical process industry.

HEAT TRANSFER PROCESS IN

HEAT EXCHANGER
Heat exchanger includes two flowing fluids separated by wall.

1.Heat first transmitted from fluid to wall by convection.

2.Through the wall by conduction.
3.From the wall to cold fluid by convection.

TYPE OF HEAT
EXCHANGERS
Different heat transfer applications require different types of hardware and
different configurations of heat transfer equipment. The attempt to match the
heat transfer hardware to the heat transfer requirements within the specified
constraints has resulted in numerous types of innovative heat exchanger
designs.
Basic types of heat exchangers are as following:

1.Double-pipe heat exchanger

2.Compact heat exchanger
3.Plate type heat exchanger
4.Shell and-tube heat exchangers

FACTORS FOR SELECTION OF

HEAT EXCHANGER
There are many factors for selection of different types of heat
exchanger, here are the some basic factors which affects for the
selection of heat exchanger.

1.Heat transfer rate

2.Cost of Heat Exchanger
3.Weight & Size of Heat Exchanger
4.Type of requirement
5.Material of Construction available

STUDY of HONEYCOMB HEAT

EXCHANGER
Our project relates to a heat exchanger wherein a honeycomb structure is
utilized.
Heat exchangers are known and include any number of structures wherein two
fluids are passed across adjacent surfaces such that one fluid can transmit heat away
from the other. Example heat exchangers may be utilized in refrigeration cycles, air
cycle machines for aircraft applications, and any number of other industrial
applications.
In general, one of the fluids, which could be called a heat accepting fluid, accepts
heat from the other, which could be called a heat rejecting fluid.
It has been proposed to utilize honeycomb structures including a plurality of cells
extending along an axial dimension as part of heat exchangers. However, in general,
all of the cells receive either the heat rejecting fluid or the heat accepting fluid.

DESCRIPTION ABOUT OUR

PROJECT
A Honeycomb H.E. consist of number of plurality cells it which
Heat rejecting fluid means Hot fluid & Heat accepting fluid means
Cold fluid is pass.
Heat is transfer through the wall of cell between Hot & Cold fluid.
As the numbers of plurality cells increases can leads to better
heat transfer between hot fluid & cold fluid.
Figure shows the Cross sectional view, front view, & isotropic
view of Honeycomb H.E.

DESIGNING
Designing part consist of a Mechanical Design of Heat Exchanger as we
study in Process Equipment Design.
In the Mechanical Design of Honeycomb Heat Exchanger consist of
following Design Calculations:

Design Pressure and Temperature

Material of Construction
Plate Thickness
Gasket Required
Design of Flange
Design of Support
Design of Head

DESIGN ENGINEERING
CANVAS
There are mainly four Design Engineering Canvases:

1.AEIOU Canvas
2.Empathy Mapping Canvas
3.Ideation Canvas
4.Product Development Canvas

AEIOU Canvas
AEIOU is an investigative tool to help interpret
observations gathered by ethnographic practices in the
field. It is an Observation tool. Its two primary functions are
to defined data needed, and to develop blocks of models
that will ultimately help in getting the objectives and issues
of a problem.
AEIOU means Activity, Environment, Interaction, Object,
Users.

Empathy Mapping Canvas

Ideation Canvas
An ideation canvas is a rough whiteboard where ideas
can be stretched into any limits or dimensions. Ideation
session is not aimed at finding solutions to the defined
problem. But to define the best possible problem and
stretch out its possible scope. The field is set and the overall
agenda is to build the clones of the ideas and pivot them
throughout the canvas so as to discover new possibilities.

Product Development Canvas

ADVANTAGES
It has a good heat transfer rate.
It should be easy to clean.
It has high heat transfer area.
It is economical.
It has high strength due to honeycomb structure.
It can handle multiple fluid.
Its maintenance cost is also low.
It is easily detachable.
As viscosity decreases heat transfer rate increases in this type of heat
exchanger.

DISADVANTAGES
It is complex in structure i.e. difficult to fabricate.
In this type of heat exchanger flow arrangement is difficult.
There are chances of leakage between wall of cell.
In this type of heat exchanger pressure drop is also significant.

SUMMERY
A heat exchanger has a plurality of cells. A first subset of the cells extends for a
lesser distance along an axis of the cells and a second subset of the cells extends for
a greater axial distance. The second subset of cells extends through separator plates
which re positioned beyond axial ends of the first subset of cells. A first inlet
manifold is defined between a first inlet one of the separator plates and one axial
defined between a first outlet one of the first subset of cells. A second inlet manifold
is defined between one axial end of the second subset of cells and a second outlet
one of the one separator plates. A second outlet manifold is defined beyond a second
outlet one of the separating plates and a second axial end of the second subset of
cells.
A heat rejecting fluid will pass for passing through one of the first and second
subset of cells. A heat accepting fluid will pass through the other of the first and
second subset of cells.

FUTURE SCOPE
By using the Honeycomb Heat Exchanger, heat transfer augmentation for
various fluids can be studied.

The performance of Honeycomb Heat Exchanger can also be studied under

different combinations of plate thickness and width ratios.

The thermal enhancement of Honeycomb Heat Exchanger can be studied by

increasing and decreasing the number of cells.

Thermal performance of Honeycomb Heat Exchanger can be assessed by

increasing and decreasing the number of passes on head by using pass
partition plate.

These Honeycomb Heat Exchanger can be used for heat transfer augmentation
studies also in refrigeration system.

Honeycomb Heat Exchanger can also simulated as shell & tube heat exchanger
by using computer software.
