Port Klang has trading links to 180 countries and is linked by major
shipping lines to 500 ports around the world.
Ports play a key role in the economy development, as nearly 75%
of the trade between Malaysia and the rest of the world.
Northport Malaysia was cited for usefulness of its product range,
container handling , timely and adequate investments, and effective use
of IT systems and efficient turnaround of trucks delivering or picking up
containers at the port.

Infrastructure is the necessary condition for efficient cargo handling operations and
adequate infrastructure is needed to avoid congestion, foster trade development as
well as securing deep-sea container connectivity for economies.
Container infrastructure, however, needs to be complemented by efficient locality
transport connections if the port is to fully exploit its potential as growth catalyst and
supply chain node.
Besides that, the terminal operations are affected not only by the larger number of
vessel calls but also by the increased variability of call sizes.
Generally, infrastructure is divided into
o Physical
o Soft Elements
Without proper linkages, the efficiency of container terminal operation may decline
due to congestion and delays.

2.INFORMATION
TECHNOLOGY
Used in every big company which help them to improve
operational efficiency by tracking resources from when they are
first obtained.
Manage and track materials.
The drivers transporting goods & make it easy with information
systems. GPS mapping software = Receive real time driving
directions.
Advantage = companys transportation businesses because
thrive on having items arrive within a certain timeframe.
EDI = structured transmission of data between organizations by
electronic means where it is used to transfer electronic
documents from one computer system to another.

WMS provide a complete end-to-end supply chain support for

real-time tracking of incoming shipping, delivery and product.
Transportation management systems locates the best carrier
service, ships freight, rate package, real-time shipment tracking
information = all in detailed.
Electronic bill of lading technology helps in reducing
inaccuracies, costs, time & provides online shipment details.
Allows cost-effective movement of product, efficiency, reduces
costs and provides actionable data necessary to increase
productivity.

3.QUALITY OF SERVICE
Many ports are unable to provide potential customers with the right mix
or standard of services because they do not have the right mix of
infrastructure.
The main criticisms of quality of service, which are more organizational,
focus on range of services provided within the port area is availability,
speed, flexibility and reliability.
Speed is the time taken to service ships and cargo, reliability is
consistency of port performance and flexibility is ability to provide
alternative solutions when things go wrong.

i) Availability.
Availability of services has two aspects, firstly the customers ability to
define the cargo handling services to be provided by the port, and
secondly the ability of the port to provide or facilitate value-added
logistics services.
Availability involves having inventory to consistently meet customer
material or product requirements.

ii) Speed of service.

Speed of service is reasonably well measured in respect of ships, as ship
turn-around time is one of the most common port KPIs.
The Northport ensure the speediness in their work thats why they can
achieve the number 12 position in the year 2014.

iii) Reliability of service.

Reliability of service is becoming more important with the move towards
lean manufacturing and minimization of inventories. Supply chain
effectiveness by allowing individual ports to identify and exploit variations
in customer preferences.
When the availability and operational performance play the role equally
the service will be reliable.
iv) Flexibility of service.
Flexibility of service is achieved by switching resources from less
important to more-important jobs in response to unexpected events. Of a
ports resources, labour is undoubtedly the most important and in some
ports one of the least flexible.

4. SAFETY IN PORT TO ENSURE

THE EFFICIENCIES.
Northport is committed to commit to conducting business in safe manner
for the benefit of all port users. Northport abides to ISPS compliance, 24
hours emergency response team and 24 hours surveillance at all
Northports entrance and exit points.
Equipments that support the safety measures are patrol car, CCTV, one
unit of security boat, and 13 units of motorcycles.
Each port needs to develop working practices that will safeguard the safety
and health of port workers in the light of its own specific circumstances.
Several actions prohibited in the Northport are sitting or leaning against a
crane, sitting or standing under a working crane or hanging load, sleeping
in any area of the port, taking lift on any terminal equipment, being under
the influence of drugs and alcohol, no swimming and fishing in port area, no
entry into operational area, proper safety attire must be worn at all times
and no smoking in operational areas.

5.WELL TRAINED EMPLOYEES

Why are employees in some companies happy to stick with the
company while others look for a change? The reason is that some
businesses know how to take good care of their employees and
provide a working environment that helps them retain in the company.
Northport has established a Learning Centre known as Northport
International Centre of Excellence (NICE). NICE aims to facilitate and
provide both technical and soft skills training required for port
operations and management. Its certification program and offerings,
framework and deliverable are in accordance to global and national
standards. In short, NICE is a one stop learning centre consistent with
the nations' aspiration to produce skill workers needed by the
industry.

Northport allocates about 1% of its payroll budget on training. Some of the

areas that the training programs cover include safety and health, operative
skills training, skills and refresher programs for marine, engineering and
ancillary services as well as supervisory and computer literacy.
Employee training is the responsibility of the organization. Employee
development is a shared responsibility of management and the individual
employee.
Code of practice covers safety precautions for Northport operations and
recommendations for the better prevention of accidents, incidents, serious harm and
injury.
This code of practice includes these topics: making work a safe place eg how
to safely access a ships hold, Cargo deck or crane using machinery safely,
Using lifting machinery, Appliances and loose gear, Providing facilities for
staff, eg drinking water, An employees own health and safety
responsibilities,
Hazard management, Emergency plans and first aid preparedness.
