HISTROY
The new name of MACSAT, namelyRazakSat,was coined by Malaysia's
Prime Minister Tun Mahathir Mohamad during his visit to ATSB on August 7,
2003 - in honor of the late Tun Abdul Razak Dato' Hussain, Malaysia's second
Prime Minister. Hence, MACSat is the engineering name while RazakSat is the
official name of the spacecraft.
The major project funding is being provided by ATSB [Astronautic Technology
(M) Sdn. Bhd.]

RAZAKSAT
RazakSATis aMalaysiansatellite
carrying a high-resolution camera.
It was launched intolow Earth orbitby a
Falcon 1rocket on 14 July 2009.
It was placed into a near-equatorial orbit
that presents many imaging opportunities
for the equatorial region.
This satellite is Malaysia's second
remote sensingsatellite afterTiungSAT-1.

LAUNCH
The RazakSat spacecraft was launched on July
14, 2009 (UTC) on a Falcon-1 vehicle of SpaceX
(Space Exploration Technologies,
the launch was initially planned for late 2005 but
due to the long delays and the launch failure of
Falcon-1 on March 24, 2006 (maiden flight) the
launch of RazakSat had to be postponed for a
considerable amount time
The launch site is the Reagan Test Site in the
Kwajalein Atoll (part of the Republic of the
Marshall Islands) in the Western Pacific.

RAZAKSAT APPLICATIONS
Environment
Natural Resources
Strategic Applications
Mapping & GIS
Urban characteristics
identification
Agricultural growth
monitoring
Updating geographical maps
Disaster Monitoring

MISSION STATUS
The operations of the RazakSat mission
ended on July 21, 2014
The RazakSat spacecraft is operating
nominally as of December 2009. About 200
images have been recorded by the satellite
at several locations in Malaysia between
September and November 2009
The first image recorded by the satellite
was on July 20 at Koh Samui, Thailand.
On July 14, 2009, the RazakSat spacecraft
was successfully placed into its targeted
orbi
9

OPERATION
RazakSAT's mission plan was carried out by engineers fromATSB
the aim of the RazakSAT project was then changed into a Research &
Development (R&D) Project in 2010
During its operations after its launch in 2009, it was discovered that the
RazakSAT satellite could not achieve its targeted pointing accuracy of within
1km of its intended target
the RazakSAT satellite was found to be 37km off their intended target
As a result of the pointing error, all of the over 1,328 images acquired by the
satellite were rendered unusable

FLEET
Like many other satellite the RASAKSAT does not have any fleet

FUTURE PLAN
RazakSat-2, a Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO) satellite, scheduled for launch in
2016.
The project has been approved in the Budget 2015
The satellite would be Malaysias third remote sensing satellite after
RazakSat-1 and TiungSAT-1

17

CONCLUSION
Like any other commercial imaging satellites orbiting the Earth in the Sun
synchronous, the launch of the high resolution RazakSAT satellite with high
passes in the NEqO enables higher imaging opportunity for Malaysia to
overcome cloud cover could provide data and complements data from other
sensors was considered a failed mission and later turn to a research porject
