INDIGENOUS
PERSPECTIVES

Weaving Indigenous perspectives through both the

Australian Curriculum and SACE.

WHAT ACARA & SACE HAVE

TO SAY
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories
and Cultures
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and
Cultures priority provides opportunities for all students
to deepen their knowledge of Australia by engaging
with the worlds oldest continuous living cultures.
Through the Australian Curriculum, students will
understand that contemporary Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander communities are strong, resilient, rich
and diverse.

SACE
In partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and schools
and school sectors, the SACE Board of South Australia supports the development
high-quality learning and assessment design that respects the diverse knowledge,
cultures, and perspectives of Indigenous Australians. The SACE Board encourages teachers
to include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge and perspectives in the design, delivery, and
assessment of teaching and learning programs by:
Providing opportunities in SACE subjects for students to learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
histories, cultures, and contemporary experiences
Recognizing and respecting the significant contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
to Australian society

Drawing students attention to the value of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge
and perspectives from the past and the present

Promoting the use of culturally appropriate protocols when engaging with and learning from
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities.

The Willandra Lakes Region

covers 2,400 km2of a semiarid landscape mosaic in the
Murray Basin area of far
south western New South
Wales. It comprises dried
saline
lake
bed
plains
vegetated
with
saltbush
communities, fringing sand
dunes and woodlands with
grassy understoreys.
Indigenous people have lived
in the Willandra Lakes Region
for at least 50,000 years.
Excavations
in
1968
uncovered
the
cremated
remains of Mungo Lady in
the dunes of Lake Mungo. At
40,000 years old, this is
believed to be the oldest site
of ritual cremation in the
world. In 1974, the ochred
burial of a male Aborigine
was
found
nearby.
The
skeleton, known as Mungo
Man, is believed to be 40,000
years old.

In September 1919 Daisy Bates settled down to full

time welfare work at Ooldea in South Australia. A
few months later she was appointed a Justice of
the Peace for South Australia, being the only
woman to hold such a commission in two
Australian States at the same time.
At Ooldea Daisy Bates pitched her tent which
became her home for the next sixteen years.
During that time she waged a "one woman war" to
keep the Aborigines from the railway line and its
"civilisation". She never tried to change, teach or
convert them. She believed them (sic) to be a
dying race and wanted them to stay as they were.

THE MABO
DECISION
SYNOPSIS ABC FILM RESOURCE
In 1973 Eddie 'Koiki' Mabo was shocked
to discover that the ownership of the
land his ancestors had passed down on
Murray Island in The Torres Strait Islands
for over 16 generations, was not legally
recognised as theirs.
Rather than accept this injustice, he
began an epic fight for Australian law to
recognise traditional land rights. Eddie
never lived to see his land returned to
him, but the name Mabo is known in
every household throughout the country.
In January 1992, at only 55, Eddie died of
cancer. Five months later the High Court
overturned the notion of terra nullius.
MABOtraces Eddie's life - from a
carefree young man of seventeen,
through his courtship and marriage to his
one true love, up to his death and the
handing down of the High Court decision
on that historic day - 3rd June 1992.

SURVIVAL AND RESILIENCE

Population predictions

The estimated Indigenous population of

Australia at 30 June 1991 was 351,000
people.
The population of Indigenous Australians is
projected to increase to between 713,300
and 721,100 people in 2021, at an average

RECONCILIATIO
N AUSTRALIA

Resources galore!

https://www.reconciliation.org.au/

In May 28, 2000, a milestone was reached in the

process of reconciliation between Indigenous and
non- Indigenous Australians. 250,000 people turned
out for the Walk for Reconciliation across Sydneys
Harbour Bridge, showing the huge amount of support
that was behind reconciliation in this country. For
five-and-a-half hours, a continuous stream of people
made their way across the famous Sydney landmark,
making it the largest political demonstration ever to
be held in Australian history.

SURVIVAL AND RESILIENCE

The Federal Government in consultation

with Labor appointed a Referendum Council
at the end of last year, to "guide a national
discussion" and consult on the content of the
question.

Achieving true reconciliation is confronting. It
requires both sides to a conflict to take steps
towards each other & that we acknowledge the
past but also leave it there. Recognising
Indigenous nations is key.
All Australians should know the history of this
continent as far back as is known, warts and
all. This should include a proper study of the
history of Indigenous cultures and society
before 1788 including kinship systems and the
different tribal nations. It should also include
the study of European history, how European
people came to, and explored, this continent
and how European cultures, systems and
institutions have developed here.

deepen their knowledge of Australia by engaging with the

Through the Australian Curriculum, students will understand
that contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
communities are strong, resilient, rich and diverse.
This will enable all young Australians, as active citizens, to
make informed decisions regarding political, economic,
cultural and social justice issues when called on to do so.
