Another Question?
Can any one tell me the difference
between External combustion and
Internal Combustion
engines?????

Ideal Brayton/Joule cycle

11

Ideal Brayton/Joule cycle

Isentropic Process- ambient air is drawn into the
compressor, where it is pressurized.
Isobaric Process- the compressed air then runs
through a combustion chamber, where fuel is burned,
heating that aira constant-pressure process, since
the chamber is open to flow in and out.
Isentropic Process - the heated, pressurized air then
gives up its energy, expanding through a turbine (or
series of turbines). Some of the work extracted by the
turbine is used to drive the compressor.
Isobaric Process - heat rejection (in the atmosphere).

Ideal Brayton/Joule cycle

The efficiency of the ideal Brayton

cycle is given by.

15

Always Remember that

The air-standard
Brayton cycle is the
ideal cycle for the
simple
Gas turbine
16

The efficiency of the air-standard Brayton cycle is

found as follows

17

Applying the energy analysis to Brayton cycle we get

the following..

18

A word about Cp and

19

Isentropic Efficiency ...

20

Now..
You have understood the Braytons Cycle
You know the formulae for energy analysis

So let us
Solve
some
Numerical Problems

THE SIMPLE GAS-TURBINE CYCLE

28

Efficiency With Regenerator

29

The effectiveness or efficiency of a

regenerator

30

The effectiveness or efficiency of a

regenerator
A higher efficiency can be achieved by using a
regenerator with a greater heat-transfer area.
However, this also increases the pressure drop,
which represents a loss, and both the pressure
drop and the regenerator efficiency must be
considered in determining which regenerator
gives maximum thermal efficiency for the
cycle.
From an economic point of view, the cost of the
regenerator must be weighed against the
savings that can be effected by its use.
