Historian James Truslow Adams popularized

the phrase "American Dream" in his 1931
book Epic of America:
He wrote "The American Dream is dream of a
land in which life should be better and richer
and fuller for every one with opportunity for
each according to ability or achievement.

Origins
In the 1600s
The old Puritans came to
America, began to have hopes
and aspirations for the new and
largely unexplored continent.
Many of these dreams focused
on owning land and
establishing prosperous
businesses.

Origins
In the 1770s
The dream of coming to America and working
hard to achieve anything a person wanted had its
roots in the Declaration of Independence signed
in 1776.

with enough hard work and luck, anybody could

achieve what they wanted in life.

beliefs, religious promises and political and social
expectations.

B. The unsuccess

The American Dream can have

positive or negative effects
The American Dream requires hard work
and dedication, and it also gives purpose
to ones life.
However, not all dreams come true, and
sometimes, an initial dream may turn out
to be worse than what one expected.
In pursuing the American dream, people
may find success, purpose, and happiness
through their work, but may also
experience failure, regret, and depression.

The American Dream seem to be

out of reach for:

According to Labor Departments

statistics
people of color: out of work as twice
as Caucasian Americans
70% Latin Americans out of work
compared to Caucasian workers
Immigrants have a much harder time
reaching success when compared to
middle class or wealthy white
Americans

Muslim, African Americans

and the American Dream

Muslim, African Americans and the

American Dream
a lot of discrimination against
Muslims than against any other
religious group
45% Muslim Americans are living
below, at, or dangerously close to the
poverty line
African Americans have faced the
hardships of racism and segregation
within the United States

Negative effects of the

American Dream examples
Life of Hmong refugees in America:
Hmong Americans are Americans of Hmong
descent from Southeast Asia, most notably
from Thailand, Vietnam and Laos during the
Vietnam War.
-The Hmong remain one of the poorest
ethnic groups in the nation.
-a hard time finding their place
- they were placed in poor neighborhoods
with failing schools, few jobs, and little
cultural and mental health support.

Life of illegal immigrants: With

poor housing and an unsanitary
environment

The campsites are made

from old pieces of wood
and plastic, small and
dark, with the only
source of light coming
from the sun
There is no running
water or toilets,
the only water source
being from the houses
used in the irrigation
process in the fields.

Life of illegal immigrants on

the way to America: Chinese
Stowaways died while trying to
enter the U.S.

WHY
TAKE
THE
RISK?

Chinese stowaways died

whiletrying to enter the US
Their prison was a 40-foot-long metal box,
stuffed deep into the cargo hold of a ship.
In darkness lit only by flashlights, 18 men
sat on old blankets and cardboard boxes.
When they got hungry, they had crackers,
rice and water. When the seas turned
rough, they had buckets for toilets.

Three men died, 15 blinking, sick men,

barefooted and barely able to stand. To
find the American Dream, they have to
exchange their lives.

Part 3:
The American dream
today

The American Dream

Everyone born equal
Democratic country and any
American citizen can be
elected President
Free to live their lives the
way they want to
The USA is full of wealth and
opportunities
Anyone can be successful if
they work hard

Its called the American Dream

cause you have to be asleep to
believe it . . .
George Carlin

Does The American Dream

work?
42% of working adults feel used up by the end
of the day
69% would like to live a more relaxed life
Parents spend forty percent less time with their
children than they did thirty years ago
Per capita consumption in the last twenty years
has risen forty-five percent, while the quality of
life as measured by the Index of Social Health has
decreased by fifty-one percent
Only 21% of young people today now think they
will achieve the good life, compared with fortyone percent twenty years ago.

Money

The entire essence of

America is the hope to first

money with money then

the United States has the

The American Dream

today
Barack Obama as the first black
president

What is unique about America is that we want these

dreams for more than ourselves - we want them for each
other. That's why we call it the American dream. We want it
for the kid who doesn't go to college because she cannot
afford it; for the worker whose wondering if his wages will
pay this winter's heating bill; for 47 million Americans living
without health care; for the millions more who worry if they
have enough to retire with the dignity they have earned.
America is the sum of our dreams. And what binds us
together, what makes us one American family, is that we
stand up and fight for each other's dreams, that we reaffirm
that fundamental belief - I am my brother's keeper, I am my
sister's keeper - through our politics, our policies, and in our
daily lives. It's time to do that once more. It's time to
reclaim the American dream.

The Audacity of Hope:Thoughts on Reclaiming the American

Dream

Conclusion

conclusion
The idea of the right to "life, liberty
and the pursuit of happiness
The American Dream is deeply
rooted in American society.

conclusion
Pursuing hopes and dreams brings
and purpose and determination into
the life. The harder you work to
achieve your dreams, the more they
are to become reality.

conclusion
However, not all dreams come true.
Many people have overambitious
dreams, only to learn the hard way
that they would not happen
American dream is not the same for
all Americans. This dream is not
attainable to all because of the
inequality rooted in class, race and
ethnic origin.
America dream is not for everyone.
