Outline
Introduction to normal and shear stresses and strains;
stress strain diagram of common materials, modulus of
elasticity, shear modulus, Poissons ratio. Calculation of
normal and direct shear stresses in machine
components.
Properties of area: centroid of area , area moment of
inertia, polar moment of inertia and radius of gyration.
Torque and Torsional shear stress.
Stresses in Beams: shear force and bending moment
diagrams; determination of flexural stress and transverse
shear stress in beam

Outline
Combined stresses and deflection of beam.
Failure prediction for static loading: Stress
concentration, uniaxial and multiaxial stress
state. Failure prediction for cyclic and impact
loading.
Cyclic stresses, fatigue strength of material,
endurance limit modification factors, Soderberg
line,
Goodman line and Gerber line. Linear impact
stresses and deformation

Design of shafts, keys and splins
Design of columns
Design of threaded fasteners and power screws
Design of helical springs and leaf springs
Introduction of rolling bearing nomenclature.
Equivalent load calculations for selecting rolling
bearings

Design of flat and V-belts. Design of wire ropes
and rolling chains
Introduction to gear nomenclature and different
gears.
Design of spur gear
Introduction to different types of brakes and
clutches. Concept of self-energizing and
denergizing shoe.

Course Objectives
Introduce students to the concepts of stress and
strength
Introduce students to standard specifications in the
design process
Familiarize students to the effects of forces and
torques on elastic bodies
Expose students to the fundamental theories of
machine design
Introduce students to the design of commonly used
machine components for mechatronics systems

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course students should be
able to:
Identify different components of machines and
their loads
Calculate stresses on machine components
under static and dynamic loads
Design machine components on the basis of
strength of material and deflection limitations
Apply standard specifications in the design
process
