Project Based

Learning
Think - Create - Explore

What is PBL?
is a student-centered pedagogy that involves a dynamic classroom approach in which it is
believed that students acquire a deeper knowledge through active exploration of realworld challenges and problems.

teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended
period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging and complex
question, problem, or challenge.

Why do we do Project Based

Learning?
Allows for student choice in demonstrating their knowledge of course content
Student choice enables students to be accountable to their school work
If students use class time wisely and productively there should be no homework
Students are able to use their learning styles and strengths to learn
Focus on various skills and competencies of both courses
Pushes students students to show deeper understanding
Students are learning to think critically and self direct their own learning
By teaching these skills to our students we are better preparing them for their future studies
and employment
There is strong evidence that students retain knowledge much longer than students taught
using traditional teaching (Uden & Beaumont 31)
Focus on application of understanding to other cultures and relate to ones own self

How does this look in the

classroom?
All content and information front loaded through interactive activities and direct
instruction for 10-14 classes/roughly 2 weeks

Following front loading, teacher led instruction 10-15 min at start of class (generally a mini
lesson on a specific topic/idea/theme)
Students break off to work on projects collaboratively, independently or with teacher
guidance (multiroom)
Teachers in room will then call upon students individually to conference with them on their
projects if needed. This allows for one on one time for all students.
No exams given; all assessment will be done through projects and other formative type
assessments.
Students will still be learning all of same things in other social studies and language arts
classes just in a different teaching style.

Google Classroom
I can look at student work in real time, at
any time
I can see any edits made and the date/time
(ex: across the room Johnny is goofing
around, I can pull up his screen)
Marking done on Google Doc
transparency
strong record
mark direct sentences, and I leave a
summary paragraph at the end in purple
text

Next goal: goobric

Allows for docs, slides, sheets, and
additional files like: jpg, etc.

Students have said:

Allows them to work from anywhere and
on any device
Can easily stay on track if school is missed
It is how they learn and want to learn
innate sense of technology, and ease of
communication
Love it because I am faster at typing than
writing
Love it because it autocorrects and
spelling and writing is hard for me
Do students need to be writing by hand?
Using dictionaries?

Some of the skills/competencies that students

develop through project based learning
