Theory: Empedocles Cosmic

Cycle

Theory: The alternation of love

and strife
Aristotle:
the constitution of the world is of necessity
such that Love and Strife alternately predominate
and cause motion, while in the intermediate
period of time there is a state of rest.

Aristotle, Physics, trans. R. P. Hardie and R. K. Gaye, trans., Aristotle, Physics,

http:/classics.mit.edu/Aristotle/physics.html, Book VIII, Part1.

Aristotles love was,an impersonal force, just

as were the intelligences, angels, impetuses, and
souls.
Edward Grant Planets, Stars, and Orbs: The Medieval Cosmos,
1200-1687. (Cambridge : Cambridge University Press, 1996), p.568

Theory: time moves in

repetitive cycles
In the Timaeus (39D) Plato talks of the
'Complete Year' in which 'all eight circuits',
i.e., the seven planets and the fixed stars,
'finish together', i.e., return to the points
they occupied at the creation.

'The complete number of Time fulfils the
Complete year when all the eight circuits
with their relative speeds, finish together
and come to a head, when measured by
the revolution of the Same and the
Similarly-moving.' (Timaeus 39D).

Theory: the world is

periodically destroyed and
reborn

at stated periods of time [God] absorbs

into himself the whole of substance and
again creates it from himself.
Diogenes Laertius VII.139

the world must come to an end,

inasmuch as it had a beginning...the
world itself is doomed to perish. (the
reason being deterioration of the
elements)

Diogenes Laertius VII.141

Platos (and Keplers geometrical

cosmos)
Astrology works because
all things are part
of an unfolding
geometrical order.

Jupiter and Saturn

Form a conjunction every 20 years
The sequence of conjunctions moves
through the zodiac in a pattern
Every 240 years, on average, the
sequence enters a new triplicity
(Aries-Leo-Sagittarius; Taurus, Virgo,
Capricorn; Gemini, Libra, Aquarius;
Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio).
The entire sequence takes 960 years

What Motivated Kepler?

Apart from the
desire to reveal
Gods plan and
reform political life,
his eureka
moment came
when he realised
the pattern of
Jupiter-Saturn
conjunctions

What Motivated Kepler?

The complete cycle
of Jupiter Saturn
conjunctions
described a circle
which, according to
Plato, was the most
perfect of shapes:
God himself was a
sphere.

The Theory of Revolutionary

Years

1790s: revolutions in Europe, spread by French conquest.

1816-24: the revolutions in Latin America.
1848: Year of Revolution in Europe
1916-1919: the European revolutions of the 1910s (Ireland
1916, Russia 1917, Germany, Austria and Turkey in 1918),
during or, in the aftermath of the first world war,
1945-9: the establishment of communist regimes, including
China, together with the independence of India and Israel,
in the aftermath of the second world war.
1960s: independence of French and British colonies in
Africa, Chinese cultural revolution, social revolution in the
West, civil rights movement in the USA, the Prague Spring.
1988-92: revolutions in communist Europe, collapse of
USSR.

Uranus-Pluto aspects 17502050

The Uranus-Pluto Square

How would Kepler approach this?
He would look back to the past
and refer to C.G. Jung, who can add
depth to Keplers argument for free
will

For example: Spanish Viceroy deposed

in Argentina

And Brazil: Cry of Iparanga

Square

Square 8-9 March 1933

Hitler comes to power Jan 30 1933.
What characterised Nazism?
Populism
A sort of democracy in which the will of the
people, emerging from its racial identity, is
supreme
Nature worship
Optimism: the 1000 year Reich
Exclusivity: non Aryans are excluded
Deification of violence

The Waning Square (An

Allegory)
Waning Square
A point of major crisis,
instability and tension in any
cycle. There is often a sense
of urgency and the desire to
actualise the ideas of the
cycle through a sheer effort
of will. The challenges of this
time seem a matter of life
and death. This is the
'winter' point of the cycle
when dead branches fall and
all is stripped bare.

Rudhyar)

Back to the last Conjunction

Conjunction

Conjunction 1965
What characterised the
1960s?
Populism/anarchy/grass
roots democracy
A sort of democracy in
which the will of the people,
emerging from human
nature, is supreme
Nature: origin of the modern
environmental movement leads to ecopaganism

The Chinese
Cultural
Revolution 1965

Back to the last Conjunction

Optimism: the adoption of

Bailey's and Steiner's New
Age
Exclusivity: the superiority of
hippy and radical culture and
contempt for 'straight' society.
Reification of violence ( a
phenomenon which is often
forgotten) and simultaneous
rejection of violence
Also
Political/social upheaval was
global - 1965-70 Chinese
Cultural Revolution
Feminism
Sexual liberalism
Technology: space race
Modernism

The Summer of
Love, USA 1967

And the Prague Spring 1968

And now: The Arab Spring

And the European Crisis

Interpretation
If Uranus is revolution and Pluto the
hidden depths, does revolution then
arise not, say, from 'reason', but from
instinct.
If Uranus is the 'new' and Pluto is
ultimate fate, Moira as Liz Greene says,
do new things take society in
uncontrollable directions?
But..Ebertin: 'building again upon the
ruins of the old'.

'The number 4 is related to manifestation
and the Cross of Matter. It represents a
striving to manifest, test, and actualise the
potential that was inherent in the original
conjunction, through a determination to
overcome obstacles and meet the challenges
of the mundane world. For collectively as
well as individually new powers only arise
through conscious determination and effort.

acknowledgments to Dane Rudhyar.

Is the future written?

'they would never have devised
certain means of averting or warding
offthe universal and particular
conditions that come or are present
by reason of the ambient, if they had
any idea that the future cannot be
moved and changed'.[1]

Kepler: what can we do?

Thesis 72: speaking of the MarsSaturn conjunction of 1602: if a
strong peace grows firm in the
meantime, clearly there is no danger
from the heavens alone.

?
Uranus-Pluto
What would Kepler say?
May 2013,
August 2014
are danger months

In Platonic terms, July-August 2013 and April-May 2014 are moments at which the
Ideal realm is in a state of maximum tension, sufficient to indicate an event such
as a break-up of the Eurozone.

The difficulty with prediction is uncertainty, and the Platonic model builds this into
its thinking. If we are Stoic Determinists we might look at July-August and AprilMay 2014 and clearly predict for both or either: the Eurozone will break up.

However, if we are Keplerian Pragmatists, our forecasts must be conditional on

intermediate political action: successful political leadership means that a break-up
of the Eurozone at the specified times is not inevitable, but less likely. The
Keplerian forecast must therefore be framed conditionally: If the Eurozone is to
break up, and measures to save it are unsuccessful, the most likely
periods are July-August 2013 and April-May 2014.

A Keplerian would add advice such as, for example, The European Bank must
increase liquidity, or agreements on further financial integration
should be finalised before July 2014.

In each case the prediction is not made on the basis of astrological

assessment alone, but in line with a theory about astrology.
