Magnetic devices
Floppy Discs
Floppy Discs are removable,
portable, cheap, lowcapacity (1.44MB) storage
medium.
Obsolete now

Zip Discs

The Zip drive is a mediumcapacity removable disk

storage system.
Zip discs are random access
devices

Jaz Discs
The Jaz drive was a
removable disk storage
system, similar to hard
discs, but with a capacity of
only 2G.

1/10/17

Jaz discs are random access

devices which were used for
data back-up or moving
large files between

computers

Storage Devices

Optical Storage
Optical storage devices Devices
save data
as patterns of dots that can be
read using light. A laser beam is
the usual light source.
The data on the storage medium
is read by bouncing the laser
beam off the surface of the
medium
This difference can be detected,
so the data can be read.

Read-Only Optical
Discs
Read-only optical discs have
data
written onto them when they are
manufactured.
This data cannot be changed.

CD ROM

A CD-ROM can store large

amount of information.
These discs can hold around
800MB of data.
CD-ROM cannot be used for backup as the user cannot write to the
disc.

DVD-ROM

These DVDs are read-only disks

that also have enough storage
capacity for a full-length feature
film.
DVD-ROMs are an abbreviation
for Digital Versatile Disc ReadOnly Memory discs, and can hold
around 4.7GB of data.
DVD-ROMs are used in the same
way as CD-ROMs

Recordable Optical
Discs
Recordable optical discs can
have
data written onto them (burnt)
by a computer user using a
special disc drive(a disc burner).

CD-R

CD-R stands for compact discrecordable. These CDs are

initially blank.
The user can store programs and
data on these disc. Theses disc
can only be written once.

CD-RW

CD-RW is an abbreviation for

compact disc rewritable.
User can read, write and delete
files from the disc many times.
CD-RW discs cost more and have
a slower writing speed than CD-R
discs.

DVD-R

DVD-Rewritable is a re-recordable
DVD format,
The data on a DVD-RW disc can
be erased and recorded over
numerous times.

Blu-Ray Discs

Blue Ray Discs have capacities of

25 GB, 50 GB and 100 GB.
Blu-Ray discs are used in the
same way as DVD-ROMs but, they
can hold more data

DVD RAM

Same properties as DVD RW but

quicker access and data can be
overwritten more easily.
Similar to floppies in nature but
has 3000 6000 times more
storage and uses optical
technology.

Flash Memory

1/10/17

Flash memory is a type of

Electronically-Erasable
Programmable Read-Only
Memory (EEPROM).
Saving data to flash memory is
very slow compared to saving it
to RAM. If a computer were to use
flash memory as a replacement
for RAM it would run very slowly.
However some portable
computers are starting to use
MR SOLOMON

flash

USB Memory Sticks

One of the most common formats

used by digital cameras in the SD
card. The cards store the digital
images taken by the camera.
Mobile phones contain a
Subscriber Identity Module (SIM)
card that contains the phones
number, the phonebook numbers,
text messages, etc.

Smart Cards

More reliable and has a much

larger storage capacity.
Cards with Flash memory are
called smart cards.

Data Storage
Data storage capacity Capacity
is
measured in bytes (B)

1/10/17

A thousand bytes is known as a

kilobytes (kB)
A million bytes is known as a
megabyte (MB)
A thousand million bytes is called
a gigabytes (GB)
A million bytes is called a
terabyte

Backup

A backup simply means making

one or more copies of your data.

1/10/17

MR SOLOMON G9 ICT

20

Storage Devices

Why Backup Your

Data?
If you delete a file by accident,

your computer breaks, your

laptop is stolen, or your business
burns to the ground, having a
backup copy means that you
have not lost your precious data.
You can recover your lost files
and continue working.

Storage Devices
Media
What are&the
differences between
Main/internal memory and
Backing storage
(also Storage?
known as
Backing

1/10/17

secondary storage) means data

storage that retains its contents
It is always slower to access data
from backing storage than from
internal memory.
Data stored in backing storage is
permanent so it is NOT lost when
the computer is turned off.
Data stored in internal memory is
lost when the computer is turned

Storage Devices

Main memory

Primary storage (or main memory

or internal memory), often
referred to simply as memory, is
the only one directly accessible to
the CPU.

Magnetic Storage Media

and devices
Magnetic storage media
and
devices store data in the form of
tiny magnetized dots. These dots
are created, read and erased
using magnetic fields created by
very tiny electromagnets.

24

Storage Devices
& Media

Advantages and
Magnetic TapeDisadvantages
Advantage: Magnetic tape is
relatively cheap and tape
cassettes can store very large
quantities of data (typically 26
GB)
Disadvantage: Accessing data
is very slow and you cannot go
directly to an item of data on the
tape as you can with a disc.

CD-ROM

Advantages: CD-ROMs hold

large quantities of data (650 MB).
They are relatively tough as long
as the surface does not get too
scratched.
Disadvantage: You cannot
save files to a CD-ROM.

1/10/17

MR SOLOMON G9 ICT

26

Storage Devices
& Media

CD-R

Advantage: Very cheap way to

store data. Not damaged by
magnetic fields or water.
Disadvantage: The data
cannot be edited once it has been
written to the CD-R .
Easily damaged by being
scratched

1/10/17

MR SOLOMON G9 ICT

27

Storage Devices
& Media

CD-RW

Advantage: As for CD-R plus the

ability to re-write and erase data
so they can be used again.
Disadvantages: Easily
damaged by being scratched.

DVD-ROM

Advantage: A film stored on a

DVD has a higher quality and do
not deteriorate with constant use.
The user can also move to any
part of the film immediately
(random access).
Disadvantage: Easily
damaged by being scratched.

1/10/17

MR SOLOMON G9 ICT

29

Storage Devices

DVD-R

Advantage: The DVD-R can be

burned faster, is designed for
data but used for everything
Disadvantage: The DVD-R
arent meant to be compatible
with everything.

Hard Disc

Advantage: Very fast access to

data. Data can be read directly
from any part of the hard disc
(random access
Disadvantage: : It can however
be a real disaster when they
eventually fail
