Introduction to Service Terminal

- A service terminal is a terminal which can be connected to a computer unit

for system monitoring as well as fault investigation.
- Service Terminal session:
Local, connect directly to a computer unit through a serial interface.
Remote, connect from MML session or Service Terminal session of
another computer unit.

Prompt
XXXX:YYY>

: indicates service terminal session established by connecting a

cable directly to a DMX computer units
XXXX is the physical address of computer unit where service
terminal session opened. For example; 0000 stands for OMU-0.
YYY shows where you are in command menu tree. For example;
MAN = main level, OSC = Operating System Command.

XXXX-YYY>

- indicates service terminal session established remotely, either

from an MML session or Service Terminal session in others
computer units.
Otherwise same as above.

Example:

ST Mini-debugger Session
- A mini debugger session can be taken
into use in fault situations, for example
when the start-up of a unit fails.
- Connect a PC to Service Terminal port
in CPU.
- Press M on PC during computer unit
start-up early phase, or press DBG
button in CPU plug-in unit.
- Computer unit loads extensions from
its PROM only rather than from system
disks.

J7
J6

Local connection

- Usually mini-debugger is used on

working OMU computer unit, since
OMU is the only unit with hard disks.
- Use MASHAN or POMOXI extension
for file system handling; i.e. copy,
rename, patch files on hard disk.

Virtual MML client

- Extension VIMMLA emmulates a telnet client to be used on Service Terminal
- Useful on times where real MML is not available (i.e. if theres no IP connectivity)
- Load the extension: ZLE:V,VIMMLAGX or ZLP:V,VIM
- Start the virtual MML session with command ZVC:<port number> where <port
number> could be 0, 1, ...

3. Chose one of the loaded extensions and execute it.
4. Display the menu of the loaded extension you invoked at step 4.
5. Execute one or more selections from the extension you invoked at step 5.
6. Return to the Service Terminal main menu and load the Virtual MML extension.
7. Using Virtual MML display the working states of all computer units.
8. Close out Virtual MML and return to Service Terminal.
9. Display the contents of the any PACK directory, under BCF_PACK on disk 1.
10. Create a directory on disk 1 (use you own name).
11. Copy the files from a PACK_## directory to the directory you have just created.
12. Display the contents of the directory you have created.

Using the CLI to Configure the Switch
- The configuration program uses a CLI (Command Line Interface) that
enables to start using the switch quickly and without extensive background
knowledge.
- It does this by prompting for the information required to perform basic
configuration procedures.
- Using the CLI, you will be able to do the following:
Establish host names and interfaces
Enable transparent Ethernet bridging
Configure Layer 2 switch protocols (GVRP, GMRP, Spanning Tree, etc.)
Configure VLANs
- System parameters are stored in a non-volatile memory. They have to be set
up only once during initial setup.
