Introduction
A river basin is a hydrologic system that
contains various ecosystem and tributaries. It is the portion of land drained by a river and its tributaries. It encompasses all the land surface dissected and drained by many streams and creeks that flow downhill into one another. One of the river basins is the Marikina River Basin
Flooding
Flood is a natural phenomenon that occurs
when the volume of water flowing in a system exceeds its total water holding capacity. It is caused by several phenomena such as; prolonged rain with considerable intensity, dam or dike break, river blockages, storm surges, abnormally high tides and tidal waves or tsunamis.
Problem
The frequency of occurrence of floods and the
intensity of damages and losses of lives resulting from it made it known all over the world that flood is a great threat to humanity. This study addresses these problems by predicting series of streamflow of the Marikina river basin to help prevent flash floods in the affected area using IHACRES software
Objectives
Generally, this study aims to predict series of
streamflow of the Marikina River Basin using minimal input data in IHACRES. Specifically, it aims to: calculate effective rainfall from total rainfall and temperature data convert the effective rainfall to total streamflow reconstruct daily streamflow series from rainfall and temperature input data interpret the daily streamflow series to predict the the streamflow of the river
Scope and Limitations
This study is limited to the prediction of series
of streamflow in the Marikina River Basin. It is also limited to the use of daily rainfall and temperature data as the minimal input for IHACRES. The daily rainfall and temperature data will be used to calculate the effective rainfall and total streamflow of the Marikina river basin.
Significance of the Study
This study aims to address the need of
streamflow modeling for forecasting and monitoring of the streamflow in the Marikina river basin most especially when it is rainy season. It serves as a basis for monitoring the rapid rise of water level in the river basin. This study also shows the relationship of rainfall data and temperature data to yield the effective rainfall.
