QUESTIONNAIR

Q1) GENDER?

( P L E A S E C I R C L E O N E O P T I O N O N LY)

In order to establish my target audience I felt

that it was necessary to ask this question so
that I could get an idea as to who was
answering this questionnaire. As my music
video will not be particularly aimed at either
of the two genders I needed to ensure that
the data I gathered from this questionnaire
was not biased towards either of two. This
chart shows that sixty percent of the people I
questioned were male and forty percent
were female.
Unfortunately that means that the data I
have collected will be slightly biased towards
a males orientation but on the other hand
this may prove to be useful as I am, myself a
female so hearing more male opinions could
act as a balancing factor.

Q2) AGE?

( P L E A S E C I R C L E O N E O P T I O N O N LY)

Much like the first question, which was

related to gender, this question was also
included so that I could establish who my
target audience is going to be. Prior to
the questionnaire I already had the idea
that I was going to aim my music video
at individuals between the ages of
fourteen and twenty-four. This is because
neither fourteen year old nor twenty-four
year olds that are going to have that
different an opinion to that which is mine
or the opinions of people I know. In other
words I believe that I will be able to more
easily meet the needs and wants of my
target audience if I choose to aim my
music video at individuals within this age
category.
On the other hand this could be argued
against due to the fact that it is unlikely
that everyone within this age category as
there are so many different factors which
could effect a persons opinion and or
taste in music video, which is dominant
reason for why this question was

Q 3 ) D O Y O U WATC H M U S I C V I D E O S ?
O P T I O N O N LY)

Although this question may seem irrelevant

it is quite the opposite. Question three both
led on to multiple different questions and
was relevant due to the fact that it soon
became clear to me that I needed to make
sure that the people I was handing out (or
sending) my questionnaires to were actually
viewers of music videos otherwise the data
on some of the questions that I collected
from them would be useless as they would
have no knowledge on the subject. This
increase the likeliness of my questionnaires
results being accurate and reliable. The bar
graph presents data that shows that thirty
out of the thirty people that partook in the
questionnaire do watch music videos, this
means that the data collected post this
question was given from sources that have
knowledge and have had experiences with
music videos.

FOR QUESTION THREE)
This was the first expansion question off of
question three, its purpose was to increase the
amount of data in consideration of how
familiar those who partook in the
questionnaire are with music videos. The
results showed that the majority of people
(twelve out of the thirty) watch music videos
once or twice a week or (ten out of thirty
watch music videos) a few times a week.
This means that there is still quite a large
percentage of audience who spend a
significant amount of time watching music
videos. Furthermore this led me to think that
what I present the audience with visually will
be just as important as what I present audibly.
My music video will have to include the ability
to both grab and retain the audiences
attention throughout. It is important that the
music video is entertaining because the
likeliness of the audience watching being large
is high.

THREE)
Again, this question is an expansion for
those who answered yes to question three
but went into more depth in order to find out
the details of the audiences music video
viewing habits. This question was more to do
with how much attention the individual
partaking in the questionnaire pays to the
music video when supposedly watching it.
The chart shows that seventeen out of the
thirty people tend to drift in and out of
watching the video. This heightens the
necessity for me, as a director in my
challenge of gaining and maintaining the
audiences attention as it is clear that the
videos that they have been previously
watching are not doing so. This could be
down to a number of factors, not all may be
related to the quality of said music videos as
it may be due to factors such as time
restraint that have influenced my audiences
viewing habits.

a better a understanding of the types
of devices my audience will be using
in order to view my music video. This
data will be more advantageous in
post production as quality of image
will need to be upheld no matter the
processing ability or size of the device.
Depending on what device the music
video is being viewed on will
determine how the video is mastered
to fit.
The graph shows that thirteen out of
thirty use a laptop to view music
videos, whereas eleven use a phone.
The two devices are quite different in
size and processing capability, which
means that this question is all the
more relevant and helpful to the post
editing process.

Q7) WHICH VIDEO STREAMING WEBSITE DO YOU USE

T H E M O S T ? ( P L E A S E C I R C L E O N E O P T I O N A N D O N LY A N S W E R I F
YOU CIRCLED YES FOR QUESTION THREE)
This chart showed that eighty-seven percent of the
individuals that took part in the questionnaire most
commonly use YouTube in order to watch music videos.
This result backs up the data collected from question six
as YouTube is available on both phones and computers
(and laptops). This data has shown me that if I want to
reach my target audience then showing my music video on
YouTube would be the best route forward. This is because
my target audience uses this way of music video
streaming the most. YouTube is also very easy to upload on
and access from both a directors and audience members
point of views. This easy accessibility could prove to be a
huge advantage in the task of getting views (the word
views being the current terminology on websites such as
YouTube, it is a substitute way of saying when an individual
has watched an available video).
On the other hand YouTube is a highly competitive
platform on which to put a music video on as there are
hundreds of thousands if not millions of other music videos
using the same platform. These other videos could be
similar to the one that I am directing, which means that I
will need to make sure that my music video stands out
from the rest in order to make an impression on my target

Q 8 ) W H I C H S O C I A L N ET W O R K I N G W E B S I T E D O Y O U
U S E T H E M O S T ? ( P L E A S E C I R C L E O N E O P T I O N O N LY)
The reasoning behind this question lies solely beneath
the fact that it is important to establish an advertising
platform. I have decided that YouTube will be my
presenting (of the music video) platform but it is also a
necessity that I establish a platform upon which I can
build my advertising campaign.
Advertising can be almost as important as the music
video itself as even the most decorated celebrities need
to inform their fans that they are releasing a new song or
video. Without the creation of this available information,
stating when the release of the video, how it can
accessed and maybe a peek view into what the video is
going to contain then there will be no awareness from
the audiences point of view. If there is a lack of
awareness then a director is at risk of hindering the
music videos chance of success no matter the way in
which they measure whether the video is successful or
not (for example, success could be measured in the
amount of views the video receives or through how much
money is made from sales of the song).
This bar chart clearly states that my target audiences
favourite social networking website is Facebook. This

Q 9 ) W H AT D O Y O U P R E F E R T H E M U S I C V I D E O S Y O U
WATC H T O B E D R I V E N BY ? ( P L E A S E C I R C L E O N E O P T I O N O N LY)
Question nine focused on the construction and
compilation of the music video. Music videos can
follow a number of different conventions in terms of
their structure. Directors can ensure that their
music video is either performance, narrative or
concept led. Although these categories can cross
over and or be combined depending on the vision
of the director and the message he or she is
wishing to convey to the their audience. This
particular question drew up data that stated that
fourteen people would prefer the music video to be
performance orientated, which would mean a lot of
filming James (the musician) performing live, eight
people said they would prefer the video to be
orientated towards a narrative.
If a music video follows a narrative then this means
that it follows a story and is more flowing in its
sequence. What I found the most interesting about
the data that I collected from this question was that
four people chose either the option all three or
other. I found it interesting because from this it
can be concluded that these individuals would
prefer the music video to be a combination of the
conventions rather than just one or the other.

Q 1 0 ) I N C O N S I D E R ATI O N O F T H E T E M P O A N D F LO W O F
A M U S I C V I D E O , W H AT D O Y O U P R E F E R ? ( P L E A S E C I R C L E
O N E O P T I O N O N LY)

The data collected from this question was especially

interesting as it contradicted the data I gained from
the previous question. By this it is meant that
conventionally music videos that are fast and quick
changing tend to either follow a conceptualised or
performance in terms of their directional pathway.
Whereas slow and smooth music videos tend to fit
conventionally (and or stereotypically) into a
narrative led directional pathway.
The charts results showed me that my target
audience would prefer a slow and smooth flowing
music video as sixty-three percent of participants
circled the previously said option. The reason for
why this is a contradiction to previously collected
results is due to the fact question nine showed that
my target audience would prefer the music video to
be performance orientated whereas, according to
this data it would prove that my target audience
would possibly prefer something that does not fit
stereotypically into this category. When it comes to
directing the music video I could combine both a
slow and smooth sequence while ensuring that
the music video is orientated around the
performance of the musician.

S E R I O U S O R F U N N Y ? ( P L E A S E C I R C L E O N E O P T I O N O N LY )
The results from this bar chart were
inconclusive as the amount of people
the voted for either the serious
option or the funny option was
equal, fifteen people voted for each.
This will mean that I will have to come
to my own conclusion as to how, as a
director I wish to portray both the
musician and my style of direction.

Q 1 2 ) W H AT I S Y O U R FAVO U R I T E G E N R E A N D O R T H E

This
question was much like the first few, its

purpose was to establish my target audience.

The reason for why I did not sit it with the rest
was because I wanted to make sure that there
was no obvious pattern to the questionnaire, I
wanted to mix it up a bit in order to prevent
bias from occurring. The chart shows that ten
out of the thirty people chose heavy
metal/rock as either their favourite/most
commonly listened to genre. This is very
helpful in correspondence to my music video as
the song that is being used is an acoustic
version of a heavy metal song.
This means that as a director I wanted to install
a certain feeling of this genre as it portrays the
origin of the song. The data also suggests that
the participants may have a clear idea as to
how members of who identify themselves
within the genre tend to dress. This will be
helpful in question thirteen (and its three
different parts) as question thirteen questions
participants on their surrounding dress code.

Upper Body Clothing Chart
Question thirteen was split into three different sections in order
to get a clear and simple picture as to what my target audience
identifies, clothing wise, in consideration of the genre in
question. As much as I would have liked this question to be
completely unbiased in terms of offering the participants loads of
options to chose from I had to limit the options available as there
is both a budget (which is small) to consider and what resources
we already have available are. This means that in a sense the
data gathered from this chart is slightly biased although I made
sure that in this question and throughout the questionnaire I
avoided bias via things such as leading questions.
The first part of the questions chart showed that eleven out of
the thirty participants would stereotypically associate a band tshirt with the heavy rock style. Due to this I will try to ensure
that the musician in my music video wears a band shirt through
out the music video. The second part of the questions chart
portrayed that sixteen of the participants associate black
normal jeans with the heavy rock style and the third part of
the questions chart revealed that twenty participants think that
musicians in the genre stereotypically wear Doc Martins. Due
to these results I will make sure that both are included when it
comes to deciding the music videos mise-en-scene, specifically
the musicians clothing attire.

The mood of a music video can be set through
a multitude of different ways. This question
was focused on the way in which the mood
could be set visually in consideration of
preference from my target audiences
perspective. The chart shows that twenty-eight
out of thirty of the participants said that they
believe that in order for a music video to have
both a dramatic and or captivating it would
need to be filmed in black and white.
Previous to this questionnaire I, admittedly
already had my mind set on filming in black
and white as I believed that it would set the
desired mood I was trying to achieve. This
questions data has confirmed my decision.
Admittedly even if the data had shown that my
target market would prefer the music video to
be filmed in colour I would have more than
likely filmed in black and white still. This is
because from watching music videos in both
colour or black and white, personally I have
found that the ones I have watched in black

Fifteen participants stated that they would
prefer a video that contains and equal
amount of frames of the artist and other
settings. The option that got the second
most popular option that was chosen was a
video based mainly on the artist with one or
two differentiating frames. Five votes
separated the two options. Much like the
previous question I was wanting to focus my
video primarily on the musician, which I also
stated in my music video proposal. This
data that can be seen through the chart
shows that my target audience are in
agreeance with how I wish to direct my
music video on this subject.

Q16) DO YOU PREFER MUSIC VIDEOS WITH OR WITHOUT

S P E C I A L E F F E C T S ? ( P L E A S E C I R C L E O N E O P T I O N O N L Y)
This pie charts data states that my target
audience would prefer a music video that is
without special effects. Sixty percent of
questionnaires participants expressed that
they would not want the to see the
involvement of special effects. This result
coincided with the result of question fifteen.
This is due to the fact that in question
fifteen, people stated that they would
prefer the music video to be orientated
around the musician and settings (and or
locations) equally, if not slightly more
biased in the showing of the artist.
If the majority had voted that they would
prefer the inclusion of special effects then it
the two sets of data would have been
contradictory as special effects tend to
draw attention away from the performer.
The data displayed by this chart also
coincides with the data collected from
question nine, which also states that my
target audience would prefer my music
video to be oriented around the performer.
