Objectives:
At the end of the session, participants shall

1. Become aware of the dynamics of
addiction
2. Expressed understanding of causes and
warning signs of addiction
3. Identified steps they can take to avoid or
stop addictive behavior

What is Addictive Behavior?
Any activity, substance, object or behavior
that has become the major focus of a
persons life to the exclusion of other
activities or that has begun to harm the
individual of others physically, mentally or
socially.
Substance Abuse
How do drugs work in the brain to produce
pleasure?
Most drugs of abuse target the brains reward
system by flooding it with dopamine.
Dopamine is a neurotransmitter present in
regions of the brain that regulate movement,
emotion, motivation, and feelings of pleasure.

Addiction is a chronic, relapsing disease
affecting the brains reward,motivation, and
related systems. People struggling with
addiction are unable tocontrol their actions
or make rational decisions about their
behavior, even inthe face of negative
consequences.

The Mechanism of Addiction


ADDICTION is a disorder of the whole person.
It is a condition where a person does
something compulsively, despite potential
harm to himself, or his desire to stop.

Drug use affects the physiological,


psychological/ emotional, and behavioral
aspects of the person.

1. Intervene for him to accept that he


suffers from addiction.

2. Help him seek professional attention for


physical and mental complications, and
counseling for emotional problems.
3. Lead him to seek various types of therapy.

4. Provide strong support system for him to


overcome his dependency.

5. Understand that rehabilitation requires day-


to-day struggle for him.
5. Bring him close to God.

6. Give constant affirmation.

7. NEVER GIVE UP ON HIM.
