Meaning of Sentence
A Sentence may consist of one clause i.e an
independent clause or more clauses i.e both
an independent and dependent clauses.
It shows the complete meaning of a
sentence.
How can you identify a sentence?

Examples
They are going to school.

She is doing exercise.

Reema is fond of reading novels.


Types of sentence
structures

Simple Sentence Structure


How these types are differ
from each other?
1. He laughed.
2. He is selling apples but I like
mangoes.
3. She is wearing a shirt which looks
nice.

I. Simple Sentence
Structure
It consists of only one independent
clause containing a subject , verb &
object.
There is no dependent clause in the
sentence.
Therefore (1) comes under
the simple sentence structure

type.

He laughed.

II. Compound Sentence
Structure
It consists of atleast two independent
clauses joined by co-ordinating
conjunctions.
There is no dependent clause.
Co-ordinating Conjunctions are:

For,And,Nor,But,O
r,Yet,So
Identification
Therefore (ii) comes under the
Compound Sentence Structure type.

Compound Sentences can also be
joined by semi-colon(;)

III. Complex Sentence Structure

Atlast , the (iii) sentence belongs to


the Complex Sentence Structure type
because it consists of one
independent clause and one
dependent clause which is joined by
sub-ordinate conjunctions like:
Because,Althou
gh,Since,When,
Until
It can also be joined by relative pronouns like:

That,Who,Whic
h,Whom
