DEFINITION

A registration of the positional

relationship of the opposing teeth or
arches; a record of the positional
relationship of the teeth or jaws to each
other
CLASSIFICATION
CENTRIC REGISTRATION
Centric relation recording
Centric occlusion records or maximum
inter-cuspation records

ECCENTRIC REGISTRATION
Lateral excursive records (lateral check bite)
Protrusive records (protrusive check bite)
INTER OCCLUSAL

WAXES

Thermoplastic waxes
Ease in manipulation
Inaccurate
Unstable
Inconsistent
Interfere in active and passive mandibular
movements

Repeatability
Lengthy setting time
Dehydration
Cracks
Sticks to teeth
Trimming of flash for accurate seating
SILICONE ELASTOMERS

Accuracy

CENTRIC RELATION
RECORD
REQUIREMENTS OF CENTRIC
RELATION REGISTRATION

Material must be passive

Registration must be repeatable
Eccentric mandibular movements must
be possible from centric relation position
by the patient
VARIOUS METHODS FOR
CENTRIC RELATION RGN
METHODS OF MANDIBULAR GUIDANCE
Active method: An inter-occlusal registration
that is directed by the patients neuro-muscular
effort
Passive method: The Dentist is responsible for
guiding the mandible and its subsequent
centric position. This method is more
consistent and repeatable
Various methods of Centric
Relation recording are
Un-guided method
Chin point guidance
Dawsons bi-manual manipulation
Tongue to Palate technique
Unguided Method
Produces a Physiologic muscle position
Difficult to achieve consistent because of
patients muscle activity
Muscle Proprioception is minimized by
separating the teeth by following methods
a) Lucia Jig (anterior stop)
b) Leaf Gauge
c) Central bearing devices
d) Cotton roll technique
Chin point technique
(One handed technique)
Invented by ANDERSON & TANNER
Patient mandible is guided in arcing
motion to the permanent hinge position
by forcing the chin gently in posterior
direction
Use a passive inter-occlusal registration
medium
Dawsons bi-manual
manipulation
The Dentist approaches the patient from
behind and places the thumbs lightly
over the mandibular symphysis and the
fingers along the inferior border of the
mandible. Mandible is then manipulated
into a retruded position
Tongue to Palate
technique
The Patient is instructed to touch the
tongue to the posterior border of the hard
palate
The Patient is asked to hold the tongue
in place while carefully elevating the
mandible until the inter-occlusal
recording medium is engaged
Centric occlusion record
The tech. use a plastic registration frame to
carry the registration material
Try it in the mouth on the side with the
prepared teeth
Place bite registration material on top and
bottom of the frame
Centering the loaded portion over the prepared
teeth
Ask the patient to close firmly until all posterior
teeth r in contact
Use the record to orient the cast for articulation
Eccentric records

LATERAL INTEROCCLUSAL RECORD

To know the anatomic limits of the TMJ
Accurate restn. With less lateral interferences
Reduced intra oral adjustment
Record the bite on both sides
Guide the mand. Approx. 8mm to the rt. Side
and close it until the teeth lightly touch and
make intentation in the wax approx.1mm deep
Protrusive check bite
record
Protrusive excursive record fabrication is
similar to the lateral record, but only one record
is necessary
The records are pre registered on the
articulator by keeping the incisors in an edge to
edge relation
Soften the same record and place it against
the max. teeth and ask the pt. to protrude the
mand. Until the lower teeth make the
indentation
Use the same record for the protrusive
adjustment on the articulator
