H2 plant- Overview
H2 produced by electrolysis of water with
KOH as catalyst in electrolyzer.
Moisture in hydrogen is removed with the
help of driers.
Hydrogen generated are stored in storage
tanks installed with safety valves.
Storage tanks are filled upto 2.8MPa and
the safety valve pops up when the
pressure reaches to 3.2MPa

H2 gas control unit
Two import lines
Each line carries one strainer
Two reducers are installed in each line.
H2 pressure is reduced in two stages. In first
stage the pressure is reduced below 2.5MPa
and in second stage the pressure is further
reduced to the required value.
Safety valve is provided in the h2 supply
line. Valve opens when the h2 pressure in
the line reaches 0.53MPa

Co2 gas control unit
Two reducers & safety valve is provided.
Co2 cylinders are connected to Co2 supply
manifold & the gas pressure is reduced to
1.6MPa.
Co2 from supply manifold passes through
the control unit where the pressure can be
reduced to the required value.
At the time of gas replacement, the gas
pressure inside the generator is maintained
between 0.02 to 0.03MPa

Oil water detectors
Oil water detection annunciators are provided
to find the oil or water leak inside generator.
Float with magnetic steel and magnetic
switch are provided inside the detectors,
when oil or water level increases the switch
closes and raises the alarm.
Two oil water level detectors are provided for
generator & one oil level detector connected
to drain enlargement section is provided for
seal oil system.

Seal oil system
In order to prevent escape of hydrogen from the
generator it is essential to provide shaft seals at both
the ends where the shaft extends through the casing.
This is achieved by providing radial oil films in the
system, this oil being kept at a higher pressure than
that of the hydrogen inside the generator.
The location where the rotor shaft passes through the
stator casing are provided with radial or ring type seal
rings. The seal ring is formed by joining two
semicircular rings.

Float tank
Oil from the enlargement section flow into
the float oil tank, this float tank function is
further to separate the H2 from the seal
oil.
This tank has a float valve installed inside
by which the oil level of the tank is
controlled.
Manual bypass valve and oil level gauge is
provided outside of the tank, in order to
manually control the oil level if required.

Vacuum device
The vacuum device mainly includes vacuum oil
tank, circulation pump & vacuum pump. They are
oil purification equipment in single ring type seal
oil system.
In normal working condition bearing lube oil is
continuously supplied in vacuum oil tank, air &
moisture can be separated from lube oil in
vacuum oil tank, then through the vacuum pump
and vacuum pipe exhausted to atmosphere, thus
caused the seal oil to be purify, prevented air &
moisture caused pollution to generator H2.

DPR
The differential pressure between oil and gas is set by
compression of the spring with help of the adjusting nut.
Compression of the spring leads to down movement of the valve
stem and valve cone.
This movement reduces the pressure through the valve as the
valve closes and increases the pressure through the line.

Seal oil operation
In normal operation, turbine lube oil is used by the
seal oil system.
The oil from the air detraining section is only at head
pressure, whereas oil from the lube oil makeup is at
bearing lube oil header pressure (0.25MPa)
At each shaft seal, the oil exits between the two rings
and the shaft either toward the bearing cavity (air
side) or internal the generator (gas side). Given the
delta pressure is greater between seal oil and bearing
cavity, more oil flows toward the air side with less oil
towards the gas side (about 10:1).

Seal oil operation
Given the delta pressure is less towards the gas
side there is less seal oil flow into the drain
enlargement section. The volume of this allows
time for any excessive hydrogen to escape back
into the generator gas space. The gas side oil then
drains into the float trap.
The gas side flow from the float trap flows into the
air detraining tank. The volume of the air
detraining and the turbulence with the bearing
drain will allow most of the entrained hydrogen to
escape out the GBV before the oil returns to the
lube oil tank.
